  1. If you're after an external hard drive for your computer, then consider a USB v2.0 one (if your computer is USB v2.0 too) ...

USB v2.0 is faster than firewire, and will be quicker for data transfers.

Firewire is mainly used for getting data from a video camera or digital camera to a PC.

  2. Maxtor & LaCie are good. I find LaCie better for Mac use.  Be sure to get a drive that is made up of one actual hard drive, not two or more drives in one enclosure.  Having two drives inside the enclosure make up one larger virtual drive actually doubles the failure rate.

    As for speeds.

FireWire 400 is faster than USB 1

USB 2 is faster than FireWire 400

FireWire 800 is Faster than USB 2

If you are using a newer Mac, Firewire 800 is a good connection.

If you are using an older Mac, Firewire 400 is what you want.

If you are using a PC that does not have FireWire, hopefully both it and the drive support USB 2.

  3. Firewire is not that common in many computers.

USB are common even on older computers.
