I have a 2 month old and she hasn't had a bowel movement in 2 days. I've gave her water to help get more fluids besides formula but it hasn't helped. Any remedies or medicines I could try? Thanks (Yes I formula feed because I do not have a choice anymore, I'm on meds.)

  1. My son is also 2 months old and when he's constipated the doctor told me to give him some apple juice and water or pear juice and water. Both work very well. Give it to her as a regular feeding, she might be hungry before she would normally be eating formula though. Its not as filling. But it works!

  2. i like prune juice and icecream like a baby milk shake all that sugar will flush out most blockages or you can do what my mom did and lather up a sliver of soap and push it up the pooper shooter its wat evryone use to do back than(dont use perfumed soaps though)

  3. You can give her just a little prunes, usually this works like a charm. (prune baby food)

  4. My pediatrician recommended a little watered down pear juice and it worked wonders for my little girl.

This sounds a little gross...but it is tried and true....put the tip of a thermometer in her bum and it should get things moving immediately.

A baby that goes two days is not really considered constipated...its actually quite common. I wouldnt worry until its been three or more days.

  5. It is common for formula fed babies to not have daily bowel movements.  If she seems uncomfortable they have glycerin suppositories for infants that you can get over the counter.

And you shouldnt feel like you have to explain your feeding choice.  :)

  6. It is not good to fool with babies that are just weeks old by home remedies, call the on call pediatricianan tonight and give them this information.  If you are not going to work tomorrow, just wait until early in the morning to call the office.  If you are going to work tomorrow, go ahead and call the on call ped, that is what they are there for.

My Mom did give us Karo syrup in our bottles a little when we were growing up for that.

  7. Any reason why it's soy?  I don't mean to pry, but my doctor said that soy formulas are known for causing constipation, and if lactose intolerance is a concern to use the lacto-free cows-milk based formula.  It's what we use.

In any case, we had an almost 4 day no poopy spell that scared us half to death at that age.  When we called the doctor, they said it was normal and to not worry until day 6.  o_O  As long as you're having a good number of wet diapers, then you're alright.  However, we helped things along a bit by doing baby massages, bicycling, standing her up, singing her "The Little White Duck" (which helped her relax and by the last verse we get poopies almost every time...), and massaging her bum-hole (we only had to resort to this once.)

Unless when she goes there is blood, our doctor said it wasn't constipation.  So we'd have a poopy and check closely, but no blood, even though it took 4 days to get there.

In any case, no reason to really worry, but it wouldn't hurt to get those legs moving, squish them up to the belly, do massages, and sing to her to help her relax.

  8. Apple juice should come right through the poor thing..you might want to water it down, but apple juice always worked on my kids...even that young a little bit will be ok.  Don't give her any more formula though, if you can avoid it..it may make it worse., at least until she has a bowel movement.  Or baby food prunes.

  9. Re: previous answers, you can't give them water at only 2 months old but apple, pear, pineapple and white grape juices will be OK, and they're all good for the bowels.  And prune juice of course - if she can bear to swallow it.

But if this goes on for over 3 days or if she's in real pain, you'll have to go for the suppositories.  You can get baby glycerine ones (1 gram dose) in most territories, or there's the soap sliver remedy recommended by Eboni which is effective and fairly harmless - either the glycerine or the soap up the butt is pretty much guaranteed to make her do a dooey in under 20 minutes.

  10. the baby always needs formula, that their food since they can not eat regular table foods! Perhaps, try less iron in the formula.... Soy formula is good. take the baby to the doctor, don't neglect your 2 months health!

  11. aww my son was the same way sine he was born. the only thing that worked for me was i changed his formula. He was on Enfamil Lipil w/iron and so I changed it to Enfamil Gentlease. Now he goes everyday.I also would give him a lil water and I would pump his legs often.

  12. I know for constipation it's prune juice, though I don't know how that would work on a two month old.

I would consult your physician if I were you and get some recommendations.

    Good luck!

  13. belly massage.  sometimes it happens that way...we dont always use the bathroom everyday but it eventually get pushed out.  for a two month old I personally wouldn't give anything other than formula because you dont know what allergies your baby may have yet nor how the little belly will react to new foods so early. sh*t will happen and then you will wish it didn't

  14. I used glycerin suppositories for my baby and it works in about 20 min. But talk to your pharmacist for proper instructions on a newborn ( I think you can only get Children's suppositories and they are too big)
