Hi! I am a young man who never really excelled at much whilst at school.

Since I'm now a bit older, however, I've taken a real interest in science. I'd love to try out some simple and straight-forward physics and chemistry experiments in my own home, using domestic equipment (or cheap and easily-obtainable science equipment).

What can you suggest, and why? Thanks!

  1. Put some Iodine on a slice of potato and watch the result :)

Make a cup of tea with a tea bag on a string, but leave the string hanging over the edge of the cup, with the little paper bit resting on a saucer. Watch the saucer fill up with your tea :)

Buy avocado, slice it in two and put some salt on the slice. Watch osmosis in action :)

  2. Make ethanol:

Mush up some appleas and boil them to release the glucose. Filter off att of the liquid and dispose of the apple mush.

Put the apples in an air tight container with a few teaspoons of yeast. Ensure that the container is at least 25 degrees.

Leave it for a few days.

Distill it by heating the liquid and condensing it on something cold like a mirror.

You will then have some pretty pure ethanol which you could burn or whatever
