  1. I've judged a few science fairs, so here's my tip - it's not the project that wins, it's the student.  For example, I recently judged a fair containing the following two projects: an investigation of the amount and type of bacteria found all over the house (involving use of a college bio lab, thanks to professor mommy) and 'which cup keeps coffee hot longer - styrofoam or ceramic'? involving a couple of cups, a microwave, and a thermometer.  But the kid doing the bacteria project had no clue about controls, variables, or what her graphs meant, while the cup girl did.  And she won - by a long shot.

  2. What are the anatomical, physiological and cellular similarities and differences between a select group of animals and humans?

  3. I think that if you are looking for a winning project, asking for projects that have won in the past is probably not a guarantee for you.

My suggestion is that you find a project that will be easy for you to understand thoroughly.  The two things that make the biggest impression are:

    1.  Has the student done a careful job carrying out the steps of his/her experiment?

    2.  Is the student able to explain (with some conviction) what each part of the experiment means, and what the implications are?

Find a project that you feel comfortable with, and make it your goal to know it inside and out.

For some project ideas, most any of these will give you a great opportunuty to excel:
