  1. Consumerism. You could easily find ads of models, products, etc., and focus on how it pressures young people into looking a certain way, induces people to spend more and more money, etc.

Being overweight/ poor nutrition: over 60% of people in the US are at least overweight. Some of this group is obese (far overweight).

    Hope these ideas spark interest.

  2. Oh cool! Using junk? Well it could be environmental in theme! It'd be great to design something from junk that sends a message about the environment. Yeah, it's the trend, I know, but the materials and the timeliness of "being green" is irresistible to me. Perhaps you could create an environmental scene, or depict something people can do to help.

Another idea could be to create something that references controversy in the news. Be sure, if you pick this one, to get ready for consequences of the art work itself. But be brave too if this appeals to you!

Or you could do something based on your heritage. Something personal gives you a chance to explore your identity, your roots, and can be very satisfying. Often, these types of projects can really deepen your understanding of your family members and who they are. To keep on topic, explore your culture through your family's perspective and experience. I'm half Filipino, half Caucasian. All my life I was raised "white", but over the past 2 years, I've been working to learn more and connect to the other half of my heritage. It is very exciting and satisfying!

Social issues? I think I personally have become interested in the effects of the internet on social interaction. From dating, friends, and career, to taboos, recreation, and research. So many elements of the relationship between the internet, evolving technology, and society intrigue me. Look up some social science on these topics!

    Good luck, have fun!

  3. Hi! here is one idea: you could make a sculpture which carried a protest message against littering/ people chucking away things on the street/parks etc. It could be a tree with branches and on the branches you tie empty tins, scraps of paper, cigarette boxes, old toys even.

  4. I can't add a lot to the previous excellent replies.  But I did think of a particular cultural issue - that of exposing or covering up women's bodies, and the different ideas that different cultures have on this subject.
