I have to write a research paper on a current sociological issue in America but I can't decide what to do it on and am looking for suggestions.

A good current sociological issue in America is affirmative action in education.  Exactly who is helped by it, and who is hurt by it?

I did mine on the relationships between divorce and the well being of children (psychologically and financially)

you can do it on racism or a specific problem that you see in the world or maybe geriatric care.

*High poverty in the richest country in the world.

*Single parent families and how that affects economic status, children, hygeine, nutrition.

*Sub standard education among the poor.

*Outsourcing of jobs - how it effects the middle class.

*Obesity among the general population - associated health problems/cost.

*Loss of agricultural land for food production.

*Lowering of pesticide standards - associated health problems.

*Ripple effect of high oil/gasoline prices.

*Economic instability in the financial markets

*lllegal immigration and it's effect on the economy.

*The role of mass media and it's effect on the public.

*The future of fresh water resources in America.

Single parenthood is a major issue.  You can research the social and economic effects of adolescents having children, professional women choosing to give birth without a husband, deadbeat fathers, etc.

Focus on education for the poor. Public school is not fixing the needs of poor children. This entire group is being passed by with achievement tests.
