ANY sociologically relevant topic will work. I would like to show a movie that I don't think most of the people in our club will have seen. I was thinking about "Body of War" but that isn't out until Oct 28, 2008.

Movies/Documentaries like:

Sicko

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

Super Size Me

Bowling for Columbine

Maria Full of Grace

Shawshank Redemption

Cool Hand Luke

I found this list. Any opinions of which might be the best? I don't know anything about most of them.

Battle of Algiers

The Corporation

Distorted Morality

The Fog of War

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism

Roger & Me

Unconstitutional: The War On Our Civil Liberties

Uncovered: The War on Iraq.

Union Maids

Wal*Mart: The High Cost of Low Price

1900

Apocalypse Now

Bethune: The Making of a Hero

Burn!

Clockwork Orange

Cradle Will Rock

Dr. Strangelove

Entertaining Angels

Fame is the Spur

The Garment Jungle

Land of Freedom

May Fools

The Mission

Under Fire

  1. 1. Three Days in the Condor (though made in 1973, is so scarily reflective of our times that you will be able to generate a lot of discussion. Plus Robert Redford back when he was till HOT). I showed it to my Intro to Social Problems and Media class and according to the end of semester evals it was the most popular lecture of the class.

I also suggest maybe picking a couple of movies with similiar themes and showing clips. For example, the way in which women with mental illness are portrayed in movies and how those perceptions have evolved over time

    Girl, Interrupted

    Mad Love

    Suddenly, Last Summer

    Sybil

FAMILY DYNAMICS: I used these films

    The Royal Tenenbams

    Ordinary People

    World According to Garp

    Psycho

THE MAGICAL BLACK MAN: I used these films

    The Green Mile

    The Legend of Bagger Vance

    Bruce, Almighty

WAR IS HECK: I used these

Full Metal Jacket (instead of Strangelove)

    Das Boot

    M*A*S*H (the movie)

    I hope this helps.

  2. A Clockwork Orange would be a good one. It touches on the dangers of a group, societal problems, solutions, societal relativism, and many other topics. It's a great movie to watch and if you were to watch it with the intent of learning sociological theories it would be even better.

  3. http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

"Bill Cosby") His name is Larry and last name begins with a "W" (and sounds a tad Jewish) Larry Goldberg (or Something like  that ) It isn't Hover like the person above suggeted it begins with a "W"

  5. Boyz N Tha Hood

    New Orleans Xposed

    Menace II Society

    Seriously.

  6. "The negotiator"

    Discussion to follow:

Should he have known who the enemy was?

Would hehave been treated the same way if he were white?
