  2. There are many.  Consider Gros Morne National Park (with the Tablelands, the Interpretation Centre, boat tours, fantastic scenery), Signal Hill (think Marconi), Cape Spear (eastern most point of North America), Lanse aux Meadows (site of the Viking settlement - probably 1000 years ago), Red Bay in Labrador (Basque whaling settlement of hundreds of years ago), New Bonaventure (site of the Random Passage CBC mini-series set), the Irish Loop scenic drive, Marble Mountain Ski facility.

In St. John's (the capital and oldest city in North America) consider the Geo Centre, the Fluvarium, the Rooms, Quidi Vidi Village, the Battery, the Regatta (oldest annual sporting event in North America) old cathedrals, dinner theatre, the ghost walk, great restaurants, entertainment and culture, the harbour and waterfront.

Think whale watching, ice berg watching, boat tours, local theatre, fishing, outdoor adventure tourism, rock climbing, etc.  This is just a beginning.
