I am writing a book on travel and want to talk about places and things to do which are not very commonly known. If there are special stories, anecdotes or unconfirmed myths about a place, it would be appreciated. I promise to send a free copy of the book when published to all those whose information I use, no matter where you are in the world. - Ajay Jain, India, connectaj@hotmail.com

  1. Get a guide book for a walking tour on your own. We did and it was special.

Don't bother with the Sacher Torte the Hotel Mozart. There's better in the cafes by the Cathedral.

Eat wurst from every sidewalk vendor with their brown bread, mustard, and sauerkraut. Cheap eats and really really good.

  2. the scottish church is very interesting. Funnily enoguh Vienna is the only city where I've ever got lost

  3. The tour of the Vienna sausage factory should be on the top of your to do list!!!

  4. used to be called vindabona when first created by the romans. the first district is the heart of the city, as this is where the romans dwelled. the walls they had built to fortify the city are still visible.

best things to be experienced are the "Heurigers" - these are wine festivals open in small villages in the outskirts of Vienna. you enter with a minimal fee (2 euro) and you get access to villager's basements where they have fermented wines for over 100 years. you get to taste each individual's brew, along with freshly baked bread and a variety of the austrian cheese spreads (which are unbeatable anywhere in the world).

  5. "Vienna City Walks" are nice, they offer a range of rather uncommon tours.
