Great Falls is amazing and its really easy to get to

Within the District you've got Rock Creek Park, the National Zoo, the United States Botanic Garden, the National Arboretum and the Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens. Also check out Theodore Roosevelt Island, just off the GW Memorial Parkway. All close at hand (Metro accessible or a short drive) and wonderful urban respites.

My two personal favorites are along the C&O Canal in Georgetown and along the Potomac on the Mt. Vernon Trail. Both are beautiful and in good areas.
