  1. Taxation without representation.

Colonists had to pay taxes to the crown, but did not have a representative in parliament.

  2. The colonists wanted a local government that would not answer to Parliament in England but rather, directly to the crown.  The birth rate and their ability to make money (for England) far exceeded that of England.  They'd gone back and forth time and time again about needing and wanting more land (The Ohio River Valley and Canada) and they'd been able to convince the crown to actually go to war on their behalf (The French and Indian Wars/Seven Years War).  The grind came in when the English had negotiated a peace settlement with the French regarding both Canada and the ORV.  The colonies were growing and needed the space.  The mindset in England (Edmund Burke was probably the most vocal on the subject) was that a continent SHOULD be shared by more than one country.  In sharing, it would strike a means of checks and balance, lest anyone get too big a head for their own shoulders.

Franklin had written and pleaded their case for more territory.  The English fought the war and when all was said and done, felt that the colonists should help foot the bill for those wars.  Franklin, some six years after having pleaded a case for war, went to Parliament , stood before them and announced that Americans NEVER wanted the wars and should not then be required to pay for something for which they never asked.  A complete reversal/contradiction. Those in the colonies had always felt and seen themselves as loyal subjects of the crown.  But they had also invisioned an empire built upon the land.  Those in England saw it differently.  They wanted an empire built upon the waves.  They wanted the world's largest and strongest navy.  The paradigm had shifted.  A short ten years later, they would go to war against England.
