Question:

What are some stereotypes about tomboys?

I'm drawing a character for a comic book that I want to be a skater/goth/tomboy and I'm trying to avoid stereotyping to make the character as believable as possible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomboy

I read that, "while the defying of gender roles is often tolerated in young girls, older girls and adolescents who display masculine traits are often repressed and punished."

So then would it be a stretch if my character dressed and acted excessively masculine as an act of defiance? Kinda like thumbing her nose at society? She's much older than an adolescent. At least 18.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Watch 'Recess' and pay close attention to Spinelli

  2. Geez I still consider myself a tomboy and I'm old :)

I hate dresses,  I drive a fast car, (with an amazing sound system), short hair, often mistaken for a L*****n, but I'm not. Oh and I can beat anyone in a race (car race that is!)

Yes, still refusing to grow old gracefully.

  3. Seriously, I am a little dark tomboy kind of girl, so feel free to ask away.

A lot of people tend to think that tomboys are lesbians...personally, I'm not. People also think that tomboys are more likely to be more volent, less loving, or are generally unsexy.
