  1. Pros- less polluted air that goes into your growing child lungs.  With more electric and hybrids it would help the environment from the drilling, future Exxon Valdez disasters, industrial by-products, transportation costs, and air pollution caused by this industry.

Cons- less money for the auto and oil industry which is why the standards haven't gone up in america since the Jimmy Carter administration.  The democrat controlled congress and senate just passed legislation to force the car companies to improve the fuel efficiency standards of their cars over time. And sure people will complain about increased prices but to me the economy is not as important as taking care of your habitat and all the health benefits that come from that.  The animals, many other humans, and nature will thank you for that.

  2. Pros - None that I can thing of

Cons - Governement interference  with the free market

              - Government interference with my personal freedoms

              - Law of unintended consequences

  3. The biggest negative that swamps all the positives, is that it imposes gov't regulation on a free market, that drives up costs for everyone.  Detroit has to build cars that no one wants to buy.

The cost of fuel for a car in America is not a significant part of the cost of owning a car.  So people in America like to buy cars that meet their needs.  That is called "freedom".

By contrast, airlines have an incredible interest in fuel-efficient jet engines, even a few percent makes a big difference to them.  So airframe and engine makers know there is a ready market for anything that increases jet fuel efficiency and is worth spending a lot of engineering dollars to achieve.

  4. Let the Eng. do there job. Do u think u know better. Are u going to require an 18 wheeler to get 30 miles per gal ???

  5. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy ( CAFÉ) standards require the automobile maker to keep gas mileage at certain level.

The car would get better mileage per gallon (mpg) and would provide some savings over the long run in buying gas.  For those people who believe that saving our planet from CO2 emissions output is within our best interests.  The news CAFÉ standards will  force the introduction of new technologies. Like the electric and hydrogen type cars of the future.

However, there are many more negatives than positives. If the automobile manufacture goes below CAFÉ standards then there is a penalty paid to the government. This will increase the cost of all cars, not just the ones that are penalized, all different makes by the same manufacture. You cannot have only increased costs on one model  when all types are figured into one budget. The costs of CAFÉ standards will span the entire fleet of cars sold.

The new technologies such as hydrogen, and electrical are a long way from actually being mass produced on any large scale and have many bugs still to be worked out.

Detroit will be put to the test to reduce the emission under the new café standards. Legislation passed by the Senate will require Detroit to raise both cars and light trucks to 35 mpg by 2020.

Detroit will have to retool the assembly lines which will costs approximately 114 billion. Lastly, driving these new cars will put the driver at more risk, since the cars will be made of lighter material and be subject to more serious injury due to collisions with heavier vehicles.

The free market system exists to offer the consumer the best in choice, affordability and quality. The café standards will hamper those efforts and make our auto manufactures job all that more difficult.

  7. Pros:

    1. Makes us less dependent of foreign oil.

    2. Improves balance of trade.

    3. Less pollution.

    4. Fosters development of more fuel-efficient technology.

    Cons:

    1. Government mandates over the marketplace

    2. Vehicles will be more expensive.

    3. Vehicle safety may be compromised.

  8. why to raise them:

-the general health and well-being of this world increase

-people will need to depend less on oil companies, this will allow us to slowly ease our dependency on foreign countries

-perhaps with more fuel effciency, we would start to use biofuel, helping our nations poor rural farmers

    Cons:

-parts and manufacturing of cars would be more expensive so the price of cars would go up too

-oil companies would suffer, having thousands of workers fired

that's all i got, good luck!
