  1. my way always wins but it only works with 2-3 players including yourself. what you do is ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK. and if you do it right you will own my friend you will own.

  2. Village Idiot must have never played DIPLOMACY. It's been "ruining friendships since 1959".

A simple strategy.. aside from the obvious one of holding Australia.. is to stockpile units.. and conquer one territory a turn to acquire a card. Wait until late in the game to trade in cards.. and you'll have a formidabe army. In reality.. because of the abundance of dice.. luck can dominate the outcome of the game.

  3. Risk....the only board game where you can loose your best friend ......it can be that cut throat.  I own a Risk game with the armies made out of wood.

Haven't played in many, many a year but first the best answer would be when you roll those dice, roll'em so they roll in your favor!!!!

Of course, as a dice roll is pure chance,  I'd say you need to strengthen the countires that you get that are the closest together.  If possible, getting Australia and those countries that make up that small area is an easy/quick way to get extra armies as you get "extra" for having all the territories of one color.

But, you may have none of those or loose in that area, so again, simply making as strong fortress like area of countries that are close together and spreading out from there is in my thinking your logical tactic.

You could also do the above as well as be "guerilla" like and strenghten one or two countires in the midst of a larger area of an enemy and hope that you can either hold them up or break out and capture one or two countries, making it harder for them to get all the countries of one color and get those extra armies.

Psyching out others is a key in any game, if you know of some way to do that it can give you an edge.

I've always used some sort of verbal tactic when I play board games with my brother.  ie- in Monopoly on your rolls you never count out the spaces, you just roll and place your piece where it belongs.  There are 10 spots between railroads so that can give you an idea.  You try to "hurry" the player when it is there turn.  You make comments when landing on a place..."just what I want"    or when someone lands on a property you want or might be interested in start telling them the deal you'll make  for the property, of course starting out low.  Talk fast, let's do that deal, now or never.

I once saw a baseball board game, Strat-o-Matic Baseball, being played where one player had made up an automatic random generator for the dice....he consistently used it, but would at times offer to let the other player use it.  His opponent happened to fall behind, and the guy with the random dice generator kept offerring it to him more and more, the guy wasn't getting the rolls when he rolled himself and as luck would have it didn't either when he occassionally used the random generator, but he was psyched out by the offer, and the "attitude" of his opponent.  Attitude, an air of total superiority,  can have an amazing effect on others in board games, reinforced when you "Get" that roll that helps you.

But,  in most games It often boils down to having the dice roll your way the majority of the time.........so hope for the best, do some verbal incantation before rolling 'em, or get loaded dice!!!

Above all have fun, and if worse comes to worse you can do what my brother did to me some near 45 years ago,  as he was loosing overall he tipped the Risk board sending armies all over the place...end of game, no decision!!!!
