Question:

What are some techniques for hitting out of the sand?

I'm alright hitting out of the fairway bunkers, but the bunkers by the green are disastrous for me. I never seem to hit under the ball enough, and sometimes i end up overshooting the green.

Any suggestions?

  1. Instead of striking right on the ball hit 1/4 to a 1/2 inch behind the ball and follow through. It will take some practice to get it right. If you have a good touch you can also try to just skim the ball off the sand. This will also require a great deal of practice as it is very easy to put to much force on the ball. Good luck and good golfing!!!!

  2. Make believe the ball is sitting on a dollar bill facing left of the flag stick for a right hander. Take the sand wedge. Open up the face to accentuate the bounce. Cut that dollar bill out of the sand. Worked every time.

  3. find the PGA pro the teaches and get a short game lesson best money  spent . tell him the problem

  4. This is a serious answer - try it.

Pretend that the ball is the center point of a pizza.  The size of the pizza determines how far you want to fly the ball.  A small pizza for the longer shots and a big pizza for the shorter shots.

Standing over your "pizza" slide the club under the crust behind the ball and let your club emerge on the other side of the pizza.  The idea is to lift the "pizza" out in one piece.  Use a normal swing don't lunge at the sand!

This really works and is one of the lessons we teach at the EGTF.

  5. Actually to hit a blast shot out of the sand you want to hit the sand about 2 inches behind your ball,  have your feet aimed a good amount left of the target and the club face of your sand wedge should be open to allow the bounce of the club do it's job and get the ball up in the air.

Do this and practice and you'll be hitting those drop and check bunkershots in no time.
