Southern blotting is a technique of transferring the DNA separated on an eletrophoretic gel (agarose, Polyacrylamide,etc) onto a nitrocellulose membrane.

Auto-radiography is one technique that has been "built" on southern blotting. It involves the release of radioactively labelled DNA probes on the nitrocellulose membrane, if any complementary pairing between the probe and the DNA on the nitrocellulose membrane takes place, it can be seen on a n X-ray film. autoradiography is used widely for detection of pathogens in food, viral or bacterial infections,etc
