I'm a new horse owner and a little worried about feeding my horse something that will cause him to colic. If you have some tips let me know. And I know to many treats will hurt him.

  1. i don't know what is poisons to horses but i know not to feed horses to much apples it gives them gas

  2. Never feed them plants, unless it's grass.

Never feed them food that is supposed to be soaked dry.

Also, grass cuttings from a lawnmower are also VERY bad (as I found out when my neighbour dumped them on my field!) x

  3. Hedge trimmings.  Yew is extremely toxic to horses.  Red maples are as well.  I would be very cautious about putting yard trimmings in there of any sort.  I've seen horses get belly aches from eating bagged grass clippings.  Don't know if it's the fineness of the cut, or the fact that due to the heat involved while it's in the bag it ferments a little, but it's not worth the risk.

Those are some lists of poisonous plants. Don't be overly concerned with colic. Horse's stomachs can be pretty tough. Colic is pretty hard to come by. But it's always good to be watchful for it.

  5. potatoes

  6. ragwort, foxglove, hemlock, horsetail, deadly nightshade, laburnum, yew, bracken, oleander, grass/ lawn clippings, oak (acorns), laurel, rhododendron, moldy hay or anything with mold on it, fruits with pits in them or the leaves of fruits w/ pits.

  7. Never give him "rumensin".  It's put in a lot of cattle feeds to increase feed efficiency, but it's toxic to horses.  I think cherry trees are also toxic to horses.

  8. Burgers. Fries. Pizza. Ice cream. Chips. Chocolate. Tacos. Hot dogs.
