  1. Don't line all of the furniture up against walls.  Use accent lights behind furniture placed in corners to add perceived space.  Use mirrors and natural light to your advantage.  Hang mirrors to reflect light coming in from windows on an opposite wall to enhance space.  Or you can place candles in front of mirrors which makes it appear that the space (and number of candles) is larger.  Eliminate clutter because it is one sure way to make even a large space appear smaller.  Leave some surfaces free of accessories to give the eye a rest.

  2. hang stuff on walls like the tv and bookshelves . get as much as you can off the floor.

  3. get wood flooring, keep stuff off the floor, paint it white, put mirrors on the walls, get lots of storage bins.

  4. Simplify.  Remove all the cluttery little things lying around.  Only use 1 to 3 pictures on the wall.  Use mirrors to reflect light.  I've got a dark hallway, so I used three of those long mirrors, flipped the sideways and put them up in the hallway.  Now, the hallway reflects more natural light.

Use light colors, with pops of bright color.  In my small house, I've got light neutral couches, light wood furniture, light neutral walls, then splashes of colorful accents and (fake) flowers.  If I get bored with the turquoise and lime green theme I've got going on, all I have to do is get new throw pillow covers, a couple new accent rugs (the large rug is also neutral on the hard wood floors) and maybe some different vases and stuff.

Clutter is the number one thing that makes a room look small.  Dark colors are number two.

  5. you can hang mirrors on more walls - they make room appear larger, lift your curtains up closer to the ceiling, paint the ceiling a lighter color than your walls to make it seem more spacious, make your curtains sheer to let in maximum amount of light in.  here are some more tips:

  6. along with others have said, I have put a stick-on border about 6 inches down from the ceiling to make the room look a little bigger, but perhaps a little shorter.  Only works well with the ceiling and walls the same color.

  7. Keep the color on your walls light, and look for furniture with slim lines- glass top tables, sofas and armchairs with legs instead of overstuffed, and use mirrors on walls- they give the illusion of space.  Keep multiple uses in mind when shopping for furniture- a sleeper sofa or futon, a leather cube  with storage inside to use as a side table or ottoman.  Always be thinking about storage when looking at furnishings- the more your clutter is out of sight, the bigger your living space will appear.
