I'm a 14 year old girl with a lot of worries. Is there a group of people I can contact? I care about everything and everyone's future, and I would like to help. I would like to help worldwide. I realize that africa will be hit the worst. Polar bears will need rescuing. This summer of 2008 will be even worse. I want the world to be saved from great mistakes that man has done. The time to act is now!! I also care because global warming might kill us. What could I do?

  1. Not much, actually.

The earth has warming and cooling cycles, based on the shape of the earth's orbit around the sun, the manner in which the earth wobbles on its axis, etc.  There is a slight increase in temp over the last 150 years or so,  but in the last 2000 years there is a slight cooling in global temps.

    Relax and go enjoy life.

  2. pollution should be stopped to control global warming

  3. begin with ur own place see u donot throw out non biodegradable substances and use them like recycling

  4. I love your desire to help, and even worldwide.  The best you can do is to help right here at home.  It is the people of industrialized countries like Canada, USA that can do the most to help.  Then there is Europe, Africa, etc.  If we could get just Canada and the U.S. on track we would be so much better off.  The best way to help is by conservation of our resources-water, electricity are the big ones.  Electricity production is a great polluter, and we must conserve our water in order to survive.  Another way is one we are already using-Reduce, reuse, recycle-we are just not using it anywhere near its potential.  Buy and use only what is NEEDED, not wanted.  Make our homes more efficient, make our cars more efficient.  That would be another one of the biggest differences people can make.  Get on the cases of the car manufacturers and start demanding vehicles be produced that don't run on gas.  It would be best if people drastically limited the use of their cars, however we have become such a lazy society, I have doubts of that happening.  We have so much technology-if people start demanding no gas cars, they will have no choice but to listen.  Global warming is just that-Global-it doesn't matter what part of the world you are helping-it will help the entire world no matter what.  So if you concentrate your ideas at home, where we can really make a difference-you will be helping worldwide.  P.S. the time to act was at least 20 years ago, but no one would listen then!!

  5. Stop selling GW as it is why we are paying such high gasoline prices now. It hurts the poor the most. Gore is propagating it and he is making millions ,look at what is going on. The CO2 is not the problem as the plants need it for their food and we need the plants to change the CO2 to oxygen.

    Global Warming Is a Myth

    --------------------------------------...

Political leaders are gathered in Kyoto, Japan, working away on an international treaty to stop "global warming" by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The debate over how much to cut emissions has at times been heated--but the entire enterprise is futile or worse. For there is not a shred of persuasive evidence that humans have been responsible for increasing global temperatures. What's more, carbon dioxide emissions have actually been a boon for the environment.

The myth of "global warming" starts with an accurate observation: The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising. It is now about 360 parts per million, vs. 290 at the beginning of the 20th century, Reasonable estimates indicate that it may eventually rise as high as 600 parts per million. This rise probably results from human burning of coal, oil and natural gas, although this is not certain. Earth's oceans and land hold some 50 times as much carbon dioxide as is in the atmosphere, and movement between these reservoirs of carbon dioxide is poorly understood. The observed rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide does correspond with the time of human release and equals about half of the amount released.

Carbon dioxide, water, and a few other substances are "greenhouse gases." For reasons predictable from their physics and chemistry, they tend to admit more solar energy into the atmosphere than they allow to escape. Actually, things are not so simple as this, since these substances interact among themselves and with other aspects of the atmosphere in complex ways that are not well understood. Still, it was reasonable to hypothesize that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels might cause atmospheric temperatures to rise. Some people predicted "global warming," which has come to mean extreme greenhouse warming of the atmosphere leading to catastrophic environmental consequences.

    Careful Tests

The global-warming hypothesis, however, is no longer tenable. Scientists have been able to test it carefully, and it does not hold up. During the past 50 years, as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen, scientists have made precise measurements of atmospheric temperature. These measurements have definitively shown that major atmospheric greenhouse warming of the atmosphere is not occurring and is unlikely ever to occur.

The temperature of the atmosphere fluctuates over a wide range, the result of solar activity and other influences. During the past 3,000 years, there have been five extended periods when it was distinctly warmer than today. One of the two coldest periods, known as the Little Ice Age, occurred 300 years ago. Atmospheric temperatures have been rising from that low for the past 300 years, but remain below the 3,000-year average.

Why are temperatures rising? The first chart nearby shows temperatures during the past 250 years, relative to the mean temperature for 1951-70. The same chart shows the length of the solar magnetic cycle during the same period. Close correlation between these two parameters--the shorter the solar cycle (and hence the more active the sun), the higher the temperature--demonstrates, as do other studies, that the gradual warming since the Little Ice Age and the large fluctuations during that warming have been caused by changes in solar activity.

The highest temperatures during this period occurred in about 1940. During the past 20 years, atmospheric temperatures have actually tended to go down, as shown in the second chart, based on very reliable satellite data, which have been confirmed by measurements from weather balloons.

Consider what this means for the global-warming hypothesis. This hypothesis predicts that global temperatures will rise significantly, indeed catastrophically, if atmospheric carbon dioxide rises. Most of the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide has occurred during the past 50 years, and the increase has continued during the past 20 years. Yet there has been no significant increase in atmospheric temperature during those 50 years, and during the 20 years with the highest carbon dioxide levels, temperatures have decreased.

In science, the ultimate test is the process of experiment. If a hypothesis fails the experimental test, it must be discarded. Therefore, the scientific method requires that the global warming hypothesis be rejected.

Why, then, is there continuing scientific interest in "global warming"? There is a field of inquiry in which scientists are using computers to try to predict the weather--even global weather over very long periods. But global weather is so complicated that current data and computer methods are insufficient to make such predictions. Although it is reasonable to hope that these methods will eventually become useful, for now computer climate models are very unreliable. The second chart shows predicted temperatures for the past 20 years, based on the computer models. It's not surprising that they should have turned out wrong--after all the weatherman still has difficulty predicting local weather even for a few days. Long-term global predictions are beyond current capabilities.

So we needn't worry about human use of hydrocarbons warming the Earth. We also needn't worry about environmental calamities, even if the current, natural warming trend continues: After all the Earth has been much warmer during the past 3,000 years without ill effects.

But we should worry about the effects of the hydrocarbon rationing being proposed at Kyoto. Hydrocarbon use has major environmental benefits. A great deal of research has shown that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide accelerate the growth rates of plants and also permit plants to grow in drier regions. Animal life, which depends upon plants, also increases.

Standing timber in the United States has already increased by 30% since 1950. There are now 60 tons of timber for every American. Tree-ring studies further confirm this spectacular increase in tree growth rates. It has also been found that mature Amazonian rain forests are increasing in biomass at about two tons per acre per year. A composite of 279 research studies predicts that overall plant growth rates will ultimately double as carbon dioxide increases.

    Lush Environment

What mankind is doing is moving hydrocarbons from below ground and turning them into living things. We are living in an increasingly lush environment of plants and animals as a result of the carbon dioxide increase. Our children will enjoy an Earth with twice as much plant and animal life as that with which we now are blessed. This is a wonderful and unexpected gift from the industrial revolution.

Hydrocarbons are needed to feed and lift from poverty vast numbers of people across the globe. This can eventually allow all human beings to live long, prosperous, healthy, productive lives. No other single technological factor is more important to the increase in the quality, length and quantity of human life than the continued, expanded and unrationed use of the Earth's hydrocarbons, of which we have proven reserves to last more than 1,000 years. Global warming is a myth. The reality is that global poverty and death would be the result of Kyoto's rationing of hydrocarbons.

  7. hey! i'm with u.the best  thing to be done is to start individually and then spread the word.

1.use products which do not have CFC's(include perfumes and body sprays).

    2.consume less elctricity and water.

    3.recycle.

4.do projects to clean ur neighbourhood.

5.join a organization like WWf or Green Peace.

  8. At the age of 14, everything is serious and urgent.  Fortunately, this issue isn't.  The fact of the matter is man has nothing to do with natural climate cycles.  Rest easy, focus on cleaning up your local waterways, and don't forget the sunscreen.  Take care.

  10. Global warming cannot be stopped.  You would be better advised to do what ever you can to get ready for the 0.1-0.2 degree C increase you are likely to see in your lifetime.

Polar bears will do just fine, they are adaptable.

And it's not going to kill us.  Most of us will not even notice.

  11. The greatest problem I see right now is not necessarily what individuals do about the environment, but the constant stream of confusion and misinformation peddled to the public through right wing media outlets who have an intense desire to protect the profits of large corporations, even at the expense of truth. You can see it clearly in the comments posted on this website which are generally asinine and embarrassingly uninformed. These people are just cherry picking things they wish were true and ignoring the majority of the evidence which debunks their desired belief. You see the same phenomenon in creationsim and any religioius faith issue. These people are absolutely impervious to evidence. I think the single best thing a person can do is to stand up and represent those who are willing to call a spade a spade.

  12. For starters, relax just a little.  It's easier to think and make decisions when you aren't so stressed.

There are lots of things you can do to help and many are totally easy:

Turn off lights in an empty room and get your parents to try the new more energy efficient light bulbs.  If everyone did this it would save amazing amounts of energy.

Stop drinking bottled water and get your water from the tap.  If it is bad tasting, ask your parents to get a water filter for your tap.  If you do use drinks from plastic containers, make sure you recycle them.

If your garbage collection service offers it, recycle your aluminum, glass, plastic and paper.

Use a cloth hand towel instead of paper towels.

Plant trees and shrubs - they produce oxygen from carbon dioxide which is a huge help against global warming.

Talk to your parents about your concerns and any other adults you think might listen to you and adopt some of these same healthy habits.

Here are some good "green" websites for more ideas:

    http://www.climateprotect.org/

    http://www.scholastic.com/actgreen/

P.S. hope that last website wasn't too juvenile.  If so, show it to younger brothers or sisters.  It still has good ideas.

  13. Buy a used bicycle and use it rain, snow or shine.  You'll be making a difference by polluting less but also providing an example especially during times when biking is rare.

  14. You can start by throwing your DVD of "Inconvenient Truth" into the trash can.   The less hot hair spewed by jacka$$ algore, the better for the environment.

Polar bears do not need to be rescued.  If you are standing face to face with one, it's clear who is the one who is needing the rescuing

The idea that global warming is caused by humans is one of the most arrogant ideas placed forth ever.  Climate changes naturally, it has been for billions of years.  I'm sure algore would love to blame the ice ages that killed off the wooly mammoths on cavemen because they were burning campfires or something.... but it's not true .

  15. At 14 you shouldn't be full of worries, particularly about things that most adults are still trying to figure out.  You will be much happier if you worry about things over which you have control.

We're not really sure about global warming.  A lot of people will tell you that we know for sure.  Don't believe them.  There are a lot of unanswered questions.

Polar bears will be fine.  Bears are very good adapting to changing circumstances.  They can eat almost anything.

As for saving the world - two things.

First it takes a lot of smarts to change things.  That means you need to study hard and get good grades.  It may not seem like that is saving the world, but it will prepare you to be an adult which is when you will be able to do the most good.

Second, if you want to help, organize a trash pickup.  Get your friends and any adult who is concerned about the environment to join you for a few Saturdays on trash pickups. I suggest picking up trash because it is dirty and unglamorous work.  I feel that anyone who isn't willing to roll up their sleeves and do real work isn't that serious.  Ask the adults who are telling you about global warming to join you.  You will see who is really serious about the environment.

Other than that, relax, do enjoy life.  We'll survive.
