  1. the answer really depends on the type of team you are going out for and the positions the coach needs to fill.

for the most part if it's aHS team that has several key positions already filled with previous players returning, a coach will look for potential in a player.  He / She knows they  most likely will not get a player that already knows every aspect of the game.  It's the coaches job to teach that to you.

A player that demonstrates physical ability (ie. endurnace, quick, can jump real high, is coordinated enough to hit or set the ball), good team attitude (good players not only play the game and have the skill, but they help the entire team be better), vocal communication and overall desire to learn the game would be something that I look for.

If you want to make your team I suggest getting into decent shape (you'll find that you'll still have to use muscles you never thought you had), show a willingness to learn the sport and try new techniques, and practice, practice practice.

  2. coaches generally look for some main points at tryouts. here are some:

attitude-if you have a good attitude, are always positive, and pick other people up, you have a good chance of making the team. if you goof off, don't try or bring people down, coaches will cut you immediately

skill/potential-these are two similar things. skills are things that you have practiced and can do well consistently. potential is inexperience in a skill, but there is a good chance that the person will become skilled. if you have both potential and skill, you have a very high chance of making the team.

work ethic-go after every ball, yell your head off, shag every ball, do the best conditioning you can and treat every drill like it is part of a game. this gets the coaches attention, and lets other people know you are serious. if you are lazy, quiet and don't want to work, you'll get cut in a flash.

the skills you must have are:

    passing (platform and overhand)

setting (must be able to set a clean set at least half the time)

serving (get at least 90% in)

defense (dig at least 75% of all hits in your area)

skills that will help you at tryouts:

hitting (depending of height, 75%-90% of hits in)(hitters)

blocking (block 10% of hits)(middles and opposites)

    jump serving (75% in)

    things you need to do:

    yell

    attract attention

    do your best

    try hard

    never goof off

don't think you are the best

    pay attention

listen to what the coach says

    have fun

    things you need to have:

    good attitude

    coachability (willingness to learn)

    potential/skill

    good work ethic

    having lots of fun

  3. the definatly look for potential, you could be the worst player ever, but if you work hard, never give up, give it your all, and show that you really want it, then they'll put you on the team.being on a team is not just to have the best or win, but for them to teach you and for you to learn.

work on the essntials likes sets, bumps, and serves. being able to dig and spike is just a bonus. if you have a killer bump, set, and bump then awesome they'll put you on the team. so mainly just work on those, and with time you'll get the spike and learn to dig properly.

p.s make sure you always have a positive attitude :)
