I'm trying to minimize my environmental impact when I move into my new appartment. I'm at the mercy of my current roommate right now, but after i move I would like to make some positive changes. What are some relatively cheep things I can do in the new place to cut down on energy, water use, trash production, etc. I'm trying to make a checklist to work with so that I can start when I move in.

  1. I would say, make sure that you recycle, almost everything can be recycled this days, check the bottom of things to see if it has a recyclable symbol on it.   Open the blinds of your windows if you have some-to use some outside lighting instead of turning on lights. Don't let the water run when you're brushing your teeth. I also heard that you can save water by placing a gallon jug of water in the tank of your toilet. Use a battery operate clock inside of a plug in clock. Things that are plugged in still use electricity when they are turned off, maybe you can keep things such as light unplugged until you use them. When it comes to washing clothes, make sure that you have a full load so that you aren't wasting water, this probably won't matter if you can adjust the water level; in some instances you can't.

  2. First, you need to replace all lightbulbs with energy efficient flourescent bulbs.  They save tons of money and help the environment.  Next, keep your hot water heater at a decent temp.  You can find out the temp desired at hgtv.com.  best of luck!

  3. To candace (the first answerer). Fluorescent bulbs may save energy, but they also contain MERCURY, aka. metal that kills you. And there aren't any places in my area that deal with them, so in a way you are putting toxic waste in the garbage when you through them out.
