Ok,

So basically throughout middle school ...I really wanted to play volleyball. But I thought I sucked.

I ♥ volleyball though

So next year(freshman year) I want to try out for the school's volleyball team

...

I have never been to a tryout...

So how does the process go

Also I'm not exactly "fit" ...I'm not fat but I'm not skinny...I guess I'm normal.....Will this effect me....Like I've never played a sport before(I know its embarrasing!)

Please Help me...

Thank you sooooo much

  1. Okay well in my volleyball tryouts there were a lot of girls, so you have to show them your skills. If you've never played a sport before, I'm sorry to say that it will probably affect your chances of making it on the team. But, never give up. I made the team because:

    a) During morning tryouts, (6:00 am at school!) I got there early so it showed dedication. Never show up late.

    b) Every once in a while, you make a bad set or a bad pass. Learn from it, think about what you can do next time to make it better.

    c) Always listen to the coachs instructions. If you've learned to, lets say, bump it one style, and he wants you to do it another way, make an effort to learn the new way. And, if you can't do it, at least they'll know you tried.

    d) Practice. You'll never get any better if you don't practice.

Also, drink lots of water, and don't complain or whine about any excerise. Do your best, and if you don't make it, work even harder to make it the next season.

I love volleyball, and I'm glad you do too! Try your best and work hard. Thats all the coachs are looking for.

and ps., if you're tall, that also realllllyyyy helps!

  2. That's awesome you want to try out! Volleyball is my favorite sport ever.

Anyway, for skills, I would definately advise you to try to perfect your passes, and have a good serve. Those are probably the most important things, but try to find the key thing you are best at, such as hitting or passing. Coaches will most likely be looking for specific positions, so try to have at least one thing you have nailed and are great at. The Coaches will notice, and who knows, maybe you'll make the team!

I'd also advise you to take some clinics over the summer in your area. Whether you're beginner level or advanced level, there will be a clinic for you. Practice as much as you can this summer, knowing you'll do your absolute best at try-outs.

You also mentioned what you can expect at tryouts. If your school is large, there is a pretty good chance a good number of girls are going out for the team. The competitiveness at tryouts is mostly based upon the number of girls trying out, and how good they are, of course. At my school, every girl trying out gets a number pinned to their back, so the coaches can identify them. One thing is for sure, DON'T go to tryouts with a doubtful mind. Know you're going to do your best and it will pay off.

Hope I was of assistance and good luck with tryouts in the fall!

  3. i would expect alot of agilities,

    example:sprints, running for the ball,

    drills like that.

    also work on your passing.

    good defense is most important.

everyone needs to know how to pass.

    even if your 6ft tall.

but if you are a taller person,

    work on hitting some,

just jump, snap your wrist, and follow through with your swing.

and deffinitly work on serving a bit too,

get some friends together and have a practice game.

    its really fun.

nobody is good at the sport right off the bat,

but give it your all and you will surely have a chance.

    good luck!

  4. Don't worry about being normal sized, fat, or skinny. I am heavier and have won the best player on my team award twice! =]

Some thing coaches look for and expect:

    - A killer over hand serve (for the ace points)

    - Control in your bump and set

    - Digging/diving

    - Team work for the bump/set/hit concept

You should look for all the volleyball clubs/clinics/team around your city and do them. They really help teach the basics, and a lot more!

  5. on the sweat pants thing: no! its really sad but you have to wear these tiny spandex shorts =] the sweats and even basketball shorts get in the way of your knee pads =]

  6. Just practice and try to be in the best shape possible. Becuase if your school is a big volleyball school their will be running. Just expect them have you pass to target./set. Serve and some hitting. Just get all the basics down and you should be fine.

    Good luck.

  7. at my tryouts we did many drills that tested your hitting some setting and passing.  Our coach did not care about serving too bad but if you were really good it could help you make a team!!

    hope this helped

  8. Start trying to eat healthier & drink plenty of water.  Get any type of exercise you can.  Many schools require running during 2-a-days.  This helps weed out the players that aren't serious about playing the sport.

Find some game or drill that will improve your hand-eye coordination.  A ball attached to a string is a good one.

If you love vb, you probably have a ball. Pass to yourself over & over until you have good control.  Try keeping the ball up using a closed fist twice, then pass it; repeat.

You can practice the overhand pass (setting) alone, also.  You want to make a triangle w/your hands. Hold them above your forehead.  You know if you have your hands in the correct place IF you were to toss the ball up, make your triangle, then move your hands away right before the ball gets there.  It should hit you in the forehead.

Practicing vball is more fun if you can find a friend to play around with!

  9. Well my high school volleyball you go through a series of drills to see how well you are in Bumping Serves, setting ,spiking usual you do a few laps not much never did more than 6 around the court. But it may vary  my coach let a girl wear sweatpants at practice but she never wore them on the court I don't know if this was by choice or forced
