i'm taking my first driving test tomorrow and i was wondering what the DMV checks the car for before you start the engine. i know they check for the arm signals, turn signals, headlights, emergency lights, and the defroster. is there anything else i'm missing?

my friend told me one other thing, but she didn't know how to explain it, and my parents don't know either.

  1. I just passed a couple hours ago!

I live in California, so it may be different in your state, took mine in Santa Rosa.

First I pulled up to the curb on the side of the DMV, and the testing lady came out.  Here is what happened in the order it happened:

1.) She asked to see my permit, my proof of insurance (which is in my parents' name), and the vehicle registration (also in parents' name).

2.) I didn't start the engine, but I turned the key to the point where all of the stuff works (windows, lights, signals, etc), and I rolled down the window to talk to the lady.

3.) The driving test lady gave me a paper to sign, which pretty much said that I acknowledge if I make too many mistakes, then I will fail.

4.) She asked me to turn on my left signal, and she walked around the car as I sat in it (to check to see my signal worked).

5.) She asked me turn on my right signal, and she walked around the car again.

6.) She asked me to put my foot on the break and walked a

    around the car.

7.) She asked me to point out where the switch for the headlights is located (I didn't actually have to turn them on).

8.) She asked me to point out where the window-wiper control was.

9.) She asked me to point out where the emergency brake was located.

10.) She asked me to point out where the window defroster was located.

11.) She asked me to sound the horn real quick to make sure it worked.

12.) She asked me where the emergency flasher lights were located.

13.) She asked me to demonstrate all my hand signals (left, right and stop/slow down).

14.) She got into the passenger seat, I rolled up the windows,  locked the doors, made sure seat belt was on and started the car, and she told me where to go from there . . .

Good luck on your test (it's not as hard as I thought it would be), and hope this helps!
