What are some tips for doing pencil sketches ?

Look up some tutorials on gesture drawing, it'll help a lot for sketches.  Be very loose in your drawing as you start.  Don't get too hung up on proportions and just try to capture the very basics of whatever you're drawing, then you can go in later and tighten it up.

If you're just starting, it's helpful to grid it out. Take a picture of what you want to draw and draw a grid on it. Draw a grid lightly on the sheet of paper you're drawing on with the same number of squares. Then just take the drawing square by square. This actually produces amazing results, especially if you draw a light grid on the paper you're drawing on!
