I take violin lessons and I really want to keep playing. However, sometimes I just get really frustrated, and I don't want to practice. Violin's sort of hard for me. I've even noticed that I'm not doing so well in it these days. I have to practice very good everyday. Any tips on how to keep going?

  1. I think it's easier to practice when you feel inspired. Go to a concert, buy some CDs...listen and enjoy. My teacher told me once that half the time he'd practice without touching his violin, just simply thinking about music. That's a little hard-core for me, but I think there is a point there. If you feel love for the music or come up with some sort of creative new idea, it's likely you'll want to practice.

  2. Maybe the music you're playing isn't interesting you, or is too easy or hard for you. Try getting another violin book; I find fiddle pieces really fun! Or try talking to your violin teacher about adjusting how quickly you go through music. Ask to slow it down a little so you can perfect every bit of it. And if all else fails (I know this is going to sound a bit harsh, especially from a dedicated violin player), maybe a different instrument would work better for you.

  3. Hey Ruiqi,

Heres some advice don't stress yourself out by playing 5 hours a day 1 hour is just fine. Never give up and don't get frustrated, or else your performance will just get worse instead of thinking "omg i got that one worng just hum the melody while you play. And  when your teacher asigns you a new song use pizacato first.

                          Hope this helps,

  4. you'd be surprised how much can be done even if you only practice 15 minutes a day-it's much better than not practicing at all :)

i had the same problem, i solved it by starting 15 minutes at a time every day. try doing that if you are bored or waiting on something. don't overwhelm yourself, try taking your most difficult pieces one line at a time. you'll catch up before you know it :)

    good luck!
