What are some tips for someone who wants to start swimming for exercise?

  2. Here goes, valuable tips for someone serious in wanting to maintain good physical health::

    1.... Frequency is important to ensure you increase your stamina, strength, overall fitness. .Write out a rough 4-6 days' programme.

    2...Start with breast-stroke, see how many laps of the pool

    you can do at moderate speed, continuously. Rest no longer than 5 mins, then continue. Continue for an hour. Record your performance.

    3....After 2 weeks, increase your distance. Swim faster so that your body is worked up sufficiently. You should be sweating but you dont feel it, due to the coolness of the water.

    4....If you are obese, learn the front crawl and use it more often. It gives a better work-out  as it requires more effort.

    For variation, you may wish to start off the session with 20 laps of breast-stroke, rest for 15 minutes, then finish off with 10 laps of front crawl. But this really depends on your degree of skill in these two strokes.

    5....Ensure you follow a healthy diet, adequate rest while following such a fitness program, for best results and to avoid any fatigue or 'burn-out'.Ensure the use of a good pair of well-fitting goggles.

As a recreational activity there are countless activities/games  that can be modified for all ages.
