I'm talking about wildlife, not pet birds.

  1. Do it early in the morning just after sunrise. Other times of day may also be good but it is a bit more challenging.  Bug repellent is always a good idea especially in the height of summer.  Keep still and listen and watch carefully.  Go to places rich in bird life, which is generally in a park or near water.  Visit different bird habitats.  A spotting scope is nice, but binoculars will generally do.  Get a good bird guide that you can carry in your pocket.  Keep a record of what you see and where.

  2. Contact your local chapter of Audobon and go on a few bird walks with them.  This will help you learn your birds and their songs.  You can also put up a bird feeder in your yard to be able to get good looks at birds for ID purposes.  The best time to watch birds in early morning and late afternoon (when birds are actively foraging before dark).  The middle of the day is usually the time when they are least active.  Get yourself some binoculars (I suggest 8x42s for a beginner) and a good bird field guide (I suggest Sibleys or Nat Geo).

  3. keep your eyes open at all times.

  4. Either work from a blind or wear dull-colored clothing. Make no sudden motions. Learn the birds of your area by sight and sound beforehand but carry a copy of Peterson's guide anyway. Splurge on a good pair of 7x50 binoculars. Rest your thumbs on your cheeks when holding them. Start before dawn. Birds will be active by first light. Carry a vacuum flask of your favorite hot drink; it gets chilly out there.

  5. don't wear white

    bring binoculars

try following the bird's song or call

    don't disturb the birds

Go to where the birds are (I'm not sure what's local for you)
