  1. K@N air filter new spark plugs. check the air pressure in your tires

  2. Filter

    tire pressure

    proper tuning

    reduce excess weight

don't let your car idle long, they don't need long to warm up.

    coast to a stop

    start off slow

    stay under 60 mph

    use cruise control

  3. No fast jackrabbit starts

Steady foot on the accelerator on the highway

Drive the speed limit, preferably 55 mph on highway

Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure

    Consolidate trips

Only take downhill trips (just kidding)

  4. Regular maintenance can be key.  I replaced the O2 sensors in my Mustang GT (1991 5.0) and picked up 4 mpg.  That also means clean air filter, good plugs and wires, clean oil, etc.

Tire pressures!  Maintaining a higher tire pressure can reduce your rolling resistance, aka friction.  The more the friction the more your engine has to work.  Be careful not to exceed the manufacturer's rating and also be aware tire pressure can greatly affect the handling of a car.

I do not agree with the cruise control mantra.  I personally get better mileage w/o cruise control.  Accelerate slightly downhill and let off up hill, the engine will not work as hard.  Cruise control will accelerate up hill, causing it to work much harder and burn more fuel.

Don't speed!  I drive approximately 59mph on my way back and forth to work and I'm trying to lower that to 55.

  5. Here are some more tips from other answers.

First of all, you should know that even in winter weather it is not necessary to warm up your vehicle longer than 45 seconds. The best way to warm a car up is just to drive it. Warming your car up for five or even ten minutes before driving is a surefire way to waste valuable fuel. Idling and revving your engine unnecessarily are two more ways to fritter away fuel, so avoid these behaviors if you can. When accelerating your car from stopped position, go slow and steady. Your foot should be pressed down no further than one-fourth of the way, flooring your accelerator also wastes gas.

When driving your vehicle there are some tips that can also help you save gas. First of all, try to keep your speed at 40 mph or less. If you have to go faster, do not exceed 55 mph because speeds higher than that eat away at your mileage which means you're using more gas. Use your air conditioner rather than open windows to cool your car, because open windows can reduce mileage by approximately 10 percent by causing a phenomenon known as air drag. Try to keep your speed steady and avoid start and stop driving.

At the gas station there are also some ways to save. Some gas stations offer advantage cards or even credit cards that sometimes offer discounts and rewards to valued customers that can reduce your bill. You will notice three choices available at the pump -- Regular, Plus and Premium. These designations refer to the quality of the fuel. If you've got a showpiece vehicle that needs special care and can afford premium gasoline, get it. For the rest of us, Regular is going to be the most economical way to go. These gas saving tips may not make a gigantic difference in your finances but every little bit does help.

  6. Buy a scooter like I did.  I bought a brand new Kymco Agility for 2K and it gets about 90MPG and gets up to about 62MPH.  You'll recoup the price of the scooter in no time.  Also, maintenance fees are very low and it also keeps wear and tear off your car or truck.

  7. Stay up on maintennece.

No faster than 55 on the highway and use cruise control.

Don't accelerate very hard but don't be slow either.

Try not to use A/C a whole lot.

    Keep windows up.
