In New York State, anyone may be excused from jury duty once.  The second time, you had better be there or they will be forming a jury to try you.

Or commit a felony and get caught.  Not even police or corrections officers or clergymen are exempt anymore.

You can get off jury duty if your work writes a short note of why they cant have you gone for a week .. This works and I know people who have done it..

It all depends on the kind of case you get called for....

If it is a criminal case, just say to the judge that you were a victim of a crime, and you would find it too difficult to judge the defendent in a impartial way.....this will get you thrown off the case.

It is our obligation to go on jury duty.  Mothers who stay at home with young children may have an exemption. Otherwise, you can generally postpone once, but not get out of jury duty, at least in New York.  Just because you appear in Court does not mean you will be called on a case.  Just because your are on call, meaning you telephone in each day, at least in NY, does not mean you will need to go to Court.  Just get it over with.

Tell them you are good friends with a police officer, or tell them you have a relative who is a police officer.  That will do it.
