  1. Well my first and foremost tool that I use as a geologist is my brain and its ability to use reason.

When I am mapping I use my rock hammer (both hard and soft rock), my Brunton compass, my field notebook, my map, a GPS device, a hand lens, a camera, and lots of Sharpies for labelling samples.

But that's just me as a mapper. Other types of geologists use different tools.

  2. Seismograph, Geo phone, tilt meter, satellite sensing systems ,earthquake alarm, direction finder, frequency finder and distance finder, air velocity finder, humidity meters  and more of instruments connected with seismology.

  3. Brain

    Lens

    Hammer

    Compass

    Maps

    GPS

    Microsope (thin sections)

    SEM

    shacking table

    diamond saw......

    etc. etc.

  4. My cruiser vest contains a Silva compass, Garmin GPS, pens, pencils, markers, sample bags, camera, notebook, first aid kit, clinometer, space blanket, bottle of acid, sample tags, flagging tape, magnet, scribe, color scale, and a hand lens. On my belt I've usually got a Leatherman, hammer and a Brunton compass. If I'm mapping I will have a clipboard, colored pencils, a scale, douglas protractor, and a topographic map and/or air photo.

Other tools that are more specialized include a Jacob's staff, plane table, transit, measuring chains, drills, explosives, chisels, core saws, rock saws, geophysical equipment, microscopes, Niton XRF analyzers, various analytical lab equipment, hardness tips, and a goniometer.

  5. a hammer, a chisel, and a brain.
