Question:

What are some top selective colleges/universities in California?

I'm searching for a list of some of the highly selective/pretty selective colleges and universities in the state of California.

I'm so far interested in the UC's (University of California), USC and Claremont Colleges (although the schools are pretty divided by interest).

What are some colleges in California that are prestigious, research universities with a wide range of majors?

They don't need to be in their own group like the Claremont colleges and the UC's.

Thank you in advance!

  1. EVERYBODY who goes to college, regardless of where it is, uses U.S. News & World Report's annual publication, _America's Best Colleges_.  This guide (which you can get at a Borders or Barnes and Noble for about $8) ranks the top 200 colleges in the U.S. It also gives specifics for colleges based on region (which is what you want), selectivity (which is also what you want), cost, diversity, student life, and many other categories.  This is the definitive guide.  You don't need to ask anyone else or look at anything else.  All the info you want or need is either in the guide or on their website.  Here is the link to the website:

    http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreview...

The website actually has infinitely more information than the paper copy does, but you have to pay a fee for this (I think it's something like $20 to be able to access the website for 1 year), but you can still browse for free and get a lot of useful info.  Heck, you can even just stand around the magazine rack ar Borders and read the paper copy for free...that's what I did when I selected my colleges (oh so long ago now, it seems).  I hope you feel this was a good answer--really, trust me, the U.S. News and World Report guide is what everyone uses, and it's what I tell my transfer students to use at the community college I teach at.

  3. well when u narrow your college choice u have to decide public or private.

UC schools are the best public ones: UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco are probably the most selective ones.

Private schools are: Stanford, University of Southern California (USC), Cal Tech

All of these schools are pretty darn selective, depends if u are in state or out of state... first time student or transfer. Any of these schools u will receive a top notch education. Pick a school for your major...not just selectivity.
