In a couple hours i am going to the rocky mountains with my mom and she wants to know what cities or towns are under 2 hours away from Jasper Alberta. We tried looking it up on the computer but didn't get anything and our map doesn't show the rocky mountains. We need help please. And if anyone has a link to a great rocky mountains map please give it in the answer. Thanks again. Hope someone out there knows.

  1. There isn't much right near Jasper.  Edmonton is the closest city, and it's ~4 hours away.  There are a couple of closer towns, but (if I remember correctly), they are quite small.

  2. Edmonton is the closest city, about 4 hours east. The closest Alberta town is Hinton, about 1.25 hours east, then Edson, about 2.5 hours east. In BC, Valemount (about 1500 people) is 1.25 hours southwest, or McBride, about 2 hours west.

  3. Jasper is inside a National Park. We do not build cities inside our National Parks areas and the rules regarding National Parks are set up to r****d any such building (and rightly so). Most of the small towns that are there, are there originally because of the railway.

    Some places, like Banff are close to other populated areas but they are quite a bit more south than Jasper is too and the southern extremes of all our provinces are more populated than the north.

    If you are going to Jasper, you are going there for the mountain park experience, not the shopping. It has become a tourist town so there are some shops and you can buy things but shopping is not your number one or even number two reason for being there or you are in the wrong place.

    Take your camera and your hiking boots. It's a great place for getting back to nature 21st Century style. Don't feed the bears - they are grizzlies up there and get deadly when angered. Don't even feed the squirrels - at one time they had a problem with the squirrels getting so spoiled by tourists feeding them that they did not do the squirrel thing - store food for the winter. Tourist's 'kindness' killed a lot of squirrels. So don't feed any wild animals.

    Have fun!

  4. Use google maps;

    Type in "jasper, alberta" in the search and it'll take you there. You can also zoom out and look at the nearest towns and cities.
