  2. Food is an important part of Indian culture, playing a role in everyday life as well as in festivals. In many families, everyday meals are sit-down affairs consisting of two to three main course dishes, varied accompaniments such as chutneys and pickles, carbohydrate staples such as rice and roti (bread), as well as desserts. Food is not just important for an Indian family by ways of eating, but it is also taken as a sort of socializing, getting together with a family of many.

Diversity is a defining feature of India's geography, culture, and food. Indian cuisine varies from region to region, reflecting the varied demographics of the ethnically diverse subcontinent. Generally, Indian cuisine can be split into four categories: North, South, East, and West Indian. Despite this diversity, some unifying threads emerge. Varied uses of spices are an integral part of food preparation, and are used to enhance the flavor of a dish and create unique flavors and aromas. Cuisine across India has also been influenced by various cultural groups that entered India throughout history, such as the Persians, Mughals, and European powers.

Although a number of religions exist in India, the two cultures that have influenced Indian cooking and food habits are the Hindu and the Muslim traditions.  Each new wave of settlers brought with them their own culinary practices.  However, over time they adopted a lot of specialties and cooking methods from the Indian cuisine and blended the two to perfection.  The Portuguese, the Persians and the British made important contributions to the Indian culinary scene.  It was the British who started the commercial cultivation of tea in India.

The Hindu vegetarian tradition is widespread in India, although many Hindus eat meat now.  The Muslim tradition is most evident in the cooking of meats. Mughlai food, kababs, rich Kormas (curries) and nargisi koftas (meatballs), the biryani (a layered rice and meat preparation), rogan josh, and preparations from the clay over or tandoor like tandoori rotis and tandoori chicken are all important contributions made by Muslim settlers in India.

  4. Kia ora, I just finished answering a similar one to your mate, I forgot to add, in Goa they also consume beef.

I was in India in '85 and did the whole circle from Bombay, Southern tip, up to Nepal and back to Bombay.

What I found being common was they eat with their right hands, (because they don't have loo paper left hand is employed), Also thieves have their right hands amputated, I will leave you to work out the rest!

Because they eat with fingers, food tends to be tepid as opposed to being hot to the touch.

The most common food I found to be eaten was Thali. It is a metal tray with indentations, for rice, curries, chutneys and pickles. They usually come with chapatti's (flat fried bread), and are continuously refilled.

Food offerings are left by mouseholes, karma!!!!!!

Guests or special people always eat first.

    I could go on.

    I hope this helped some.

    Take it easy
