  3. What is a green revolution....?

  4. The Green Revolution in India depended a great deal on the State Agricultural Universities, all of which have strong Research facilities. At the national level, ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) co-ordinates Universities and other research programs. Directly under ICAR are some prestigious research institutions, e.g., IARI Delhi, Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kerala, etc. You can easily get a list by visiting ICAR web site.

There are a number of private agencies who indulge in agricultural research. UPASI (United Planters Association of South India) is a name that readily comes to mind. Some companies, e.g., ITC, do research mainly limited to the crops concerning them, like tobacco. Sugar cane research is also done by both public institutions as well as private agencies. Recently, some companies have turned their research into business, selling genetically modified planting materials, tissue culture materials, etc. They are terribly profit-crazy.

The Green Revolution was not an panacea or complete answer to problems. Africa is a vast and varied continuent. Great care and caution are required when introducing global agricultural and land use changes. Ecological considerations, the cultural diversity of the various peoples, and wild life conservation are all important. So, the problem of agricultural production in Africa has to be treated in multiple ways, through a large number of approaches, and wide selection of technologies.
