  1. Yeah, eat cuy. Just don't look at it. Actually, a lot of the food is really interesting in Ecuador. Just eat at established restaurants. Even Ecuadorians get sick eating some of the street food.

And Mindo! Mindo is a tiny, tiny, tiny village about two hours from Quito. It's very cozy, and there are so many BIRDS! And flowers. It's at a much lower altitude than Quito (well, what isn't?) so it's relatively humid and tropical.

Nearly all the "hostels" in Mindo are just friendly neighborhood families trying to earn an extra bit of money, and quite a few of them are bird guides on top of that. They have a special kind of cheese that only comes from Mindo, and you can pick fruit off the trees. You can also hike, see waterfalls, and go tubing. It's a really interesting, relaxing place. I definitely recommend Mindo.

  2. I'd say go to McDonalds...that should be an interesting experience!

  3. go to the science museum of the equator (the real equator), you can balance an egg on a nail, see the coreolis effect, and learn about the indigenous people, the cocinelle beatle plus much more...or you could learn to dance salsa...  have fun!!

  4. Its a bit touristy, but you can visit Mitad del Mundo. Its the park that marks the Ecuator. I have a photo of me sitting on the line that runs through the park that marks the Ecuator eating a Guinea Pig! You could also eat a Guinea Pig, which is called Cuy. Its really pretty good. There is a really wonderful wild life refuge north of Quito called Yanacocha. Its got good trails and wonderful birds.
