  1. Personally I don't recommend doing an over hand serve with a fist.  You can break a lot of little bones by doing that and then you would have to sit out for a long time.  So just serve with an open palm and it will hurt at first but keep trying at it until you are good.

  2. You are aloud to, but its bad to get into a bad habbit. Wikipedia have lots of info on the game and rules if you need any more additional help.

  3. To look up a full rule book go to www.usavolleyball.org - rules/officials tab, rules, 2008 indoor rules.  this will give up all the rules you will ever need to know.  there are a few differences between USA/fivb rules, and high school/federation rules.  Just be aware of that fact.  But if you read the USA/fivb rules you will have a good understanding of the rules of volleyball.

Yes you can over hand serve with a fist.  I would not suggest doing it (all the time) but it is not illegal, and if done properly can be very effect way to make the ball "float" in the air.

  4. Using your fist to serve a volleyball is not a good way to go; you really sacrifice control by reducing the surface area of the contact plane.

Even if you are serving a floater, you should strike the ball with an open hand for more control. If you want to be a good server, you should be able to control where the ball is served every time. Punching a volleyball usually produces an unpredictable result.

No matter how you serve, it needs to clear the net and land in bounds 80% of the time or MORE depending on the level you play. I hope this helps.

  5. i know we cant serve w/ a fist, but im not sure if its an official rule or just sumthing our coach does. for rules, just ask ur coach i mean theres too many just to ramble about them

  6. Legally, you can.  However, as a  coach, I wouldn't recommend it, and I don't allow my girls to do so.  Reason being, you lose almost all control when you serve with a closed fist.  You should learn to serve open handed first, and then, if you want to learn other specialty serves, you can do so, but you should learn the correct way, with the most control first.

  7. The referee will not whistle you for using your fist on the serve.  However, your coach may put you on the bench.  You may get more power.  You may get more float.  You will get LESS control.

As suggested above, the usav book is a great place to start.  You can take an easier way by going to the following web page at http://pavo.org/pdf/Rule_Comp_2007-NFHS-...  It contains the roughly 100 differences between the USAV and the NCAA and the NFSHSA (which governs the junior high and high school rules.)
