I want to start a vegetable garden and was wondering if I had to wait until spring to start planing, or if there was anything I could plant in late summer/early fall. By the way, I live in upstate NY. Thanks!

  1. when it starts to cool a bit you can plant lots of greens (spinach and lettuce, etc.), these are quick growing to enjoy this fall.  cabbage will grow in fall and early winter.  plant strawberries and potatoes for next year.

  2. Check nurseries to see what they have left.  Lots are half price right now.  See if stores have seed packets left.  Target, Wal Mart, Walreens, or nurseries.  You can plant what they call cool season crops.  Spinach, lettuce, radishes.  All from seeds are fine.  You can plant basil also to make pesto with for the fall.  Don't delay!  Enjoy!

  3. beets, radishes, turnips, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, spinach. Plant soon.

  4. you can plant your garlic around the end of october for next year...if you like garlic...

  5. It is difficult to find vegetable plants this late in the season, the stores are usually sold out.  Next year try for May.  Lettuce likes the cool weather, if you can find it now.  Most vegetables won't make it through your winter, so you will have to replant in the Spring, anyway.  Strawberries should come back next year, so you could try that.  But I don't know if they would have enough time at this point to really grow some berries for you.
