My father taught me how to play chess when I was a kid. I have just learned it & never studied the tactis or the strategies involved. But I want to take it up very seriously now. So I am looking for a good book- with lots of pics & no complications.

Thanks all

  1. i am good at chess. we could play against each other on Yahoo games. Wanna?

    give me a buzz

  2. Yes I do.Tactics can be found on http://chesstempo.com/

You then there register your account, then go on solve tactics.

Once you solve the tactic it will say right or wrong. If wrong you can always see why.

You also get a rating to enjoy the fun.

  3. One of the best people I know, possibly THE best, told me that you do not need to read books until you get pretty good.

Around 12-1400 using the rating system.

Most raw tactic books would go over the head of any casual player anyway...

EDIT: Playing people/computers (especially) those better than you makes you a lot better. Even though it gets discouraging.

Think about it, if you played basketball with someone 50 pounds smaller and 6 inches shorter than you, would you get better?

That is why it is best to play up.

  4. The best is "Chess Fundamentals" by Jose Capablanca.

Also get any of the quiz books that show a diagram with your task, like White to win in two moves, or Black to draw.  These are great.

  5. The best solution of getting good in chess is play more. No need book actually. Try on the yahoo game! or play with your dad. Because different people will came out different strategy. Hope you are great in chess soon.

  6. These books don't bog you down with excessive notation and are very simple to follow.  I have a lot of chess books and these two stand out as being the two that I have benefitted from the most and unlike most of my books, these are a lot of fun to use.

Bruce Pandolfini's book, Beginning Chess is the best book by far that I've seen which will train your eye to see golden opportunities that are regularly overlooked. It's a fun way to learn because it gives you chess drills and scores your perfomance. That way, you can always go through the book again and try to beat your previous best score!

Also, Susan Polgar's book, Chess Tactics For Champions ($17 at Barnes & Noble) is a great way to learn how to create forks, pins and skewers. My game improved greatly after reading just the first 10 pages! A very exciting book! After spending a little time with it you can't wait to play a game and try out what she shows you! A really great book!!You would probably enjoy her website, too: Polgarchess.com.

Good luck!  I hope this helps!

  7. The Usbourne Book of Playing Chess

It is an older book, but it gets the point across succinctly and includes a sample game as well.

  8. Hello,

See 'BOOK' under the letter 'B' on my web page below?  I hope this is helpful for you.

    Yours,

    Chesmayne.

  9. Since you know the very basics s good book for you would be:

"Winning Chess Tactics" by Seirawan & Silman

Which is the best starter book on tactics I have ever seen.

For a list of books and the order in which to read them and a guide on how to improve your chess you should visit the Chessville site it is one of the very best sites on the web for new and improving players.  here is the link

  10. You are right. There is a limit to how much playing more games will improve you. Reading good books can improve you much faster. The books mentioned above are good. Start with the basic books and move up to more sophisticated ones when everything seems obvious.

  11. Yasser's Tactics book was already mentioned. Actually, I think the entire "Winning Chess" series is great for beginning to intermediate players. First, buy a tactics book to explain the tactics to you. Then, buy a book full of tactics puzzles and go through them time and again. The average player under 2000 will not have to worry so much about strategy compared to tactics. In most games, tactics and blunders will decide the outcome.

  12. My bro is an avid chess player & he has lot of chess books. He is in US right now - maybe u can contact him in Malibu, CA, when u get back, Gloria.
