  1. As sjburke said you aren't going to touch the value of internet companies in any big box store. Most of them offer a 30 day trial and if you don't like them you are only out for the return shipping. I am a big supporter of internet retailing since when you subtract the overhead of a brick and mortar store the prices are awesome.

  2. I'm a fan of Infinity speakers. I had a front pair for almost 30 years, that I replaced last year with a wonderful pair of Beta 50 tower speakers, whose sound is just great. I run them with a rear pair of Beta 10 bookshelf speakers.

Now, the Beta line is being phased out, so they're getting hard to find.

BPAV is out of stock on the black Beta 40s, at half off at $199.95 each. In cherry they want $229.95 for those (Same list price), in stock, and both prices include free US ground shipping, and no sales tax.

HookedonTronics has the black speakers, for $218 each, in stock, but shipping is likely at least $60.

Amazon.com has them, too, in black, for $199.97, but with  $66.80 for shipping, because it's sold through amazon by OneCall.

Man, I'm really glad that I got my 50s last year. They only cost me $170 new, with about $20 of sales tax, for a total of $360.

    That was a sweet deal.

  3. There are definitely better speakers around.

I'm going to go slightly over your budget on one or two suggestions, but at least there's something for you to consider.

    1) Elemental Designs A6 6T6 $500/pair - http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info...

Really, really should be hard to look past these. They will blow away pretty much anything in their price range from big box stores. You can check out any specialty AV site and you'll see Elemental Designs mentioned.

They come with a 5 year warranty and free UPS shipping within the US 48. You get response from 40Hz to 22kHz +/- 3dB which means it plays deep and with 250W handling it can play loud while keeping the fidelity.

    2) Aperion Audio 4T $325/ea = $650 - http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/NEW-...

An excellent internet direct company with 30 days in home free trial, they pay for the return shipping also if you don't like them.

    3) Axiom Audio M22v2 bookshelves - $470/pair - http://axiomaudio.com/m22.html

My personal favourite internet speaker company for bookshelves/centres/towers - 30 days in home free trial, you pay the return shipping if you don't like them. (Their cheapest towers are $780/pair)

Yes they are bookshelves, but their larger than most and have frequency response down to 60Hz -3dB and 50Hz -9dB.

You would not be disappointed with any of these.
