I'm going to play DE in college and i'm around 5'11 255 I was wondering what else can i do to prevent myself from gettin pancake.

So far I've bench 325, squat 405 and deadlift 315 I also run around with a 20lb back pack to get faster and quicker.

Any comments about my situation would be appreciated, n please remind me what else I can do

Thanks

  1. when ur about to get hit, get low.

  2. keep doing what ur doing, get low, try doing rip moves, watch how howie long rips with the raiders and chris long (his son) did with virgina, they have the sickest rip moves ive ever seen, also like mike and the other dude said, stay low. and what i like to do when i play DE, i get sticky WR gloves, and i hold and rip like crazy

  3. Pretty much what Mike said. I remember when I was eight, I played cornerback, and when I came on a cornerback blitz I got lifted off of my feet so many times. Until I got low.

  4. The "get low" statement only applies when you're about to be sideswiped on a trap play.  For your situation you're only going to get pancacked MORE if that's your answer to big, dominant blockers.

Getting pancaked results when you're trying to overpower/maintain contact with a larger and/or stronger and/or better leveraged athlete.  At your heighth, you're going to see a lot of those - because a lot of tackles are going to be well above 6 feet in height and heavier than you.

What's left?  Quickness.  Make full contact, but don't get so tied up that you can be overpowered.  Work on one side/one part of the blocker's body (obviously not always the same side/spot - keep them guessing).

Example:  You need to keep blockers off of your "core" by delivering a strong shot to the body with one forearm and a strong stiff arm or "swim" from under the blocker's armpit with your other hand.  These two motions together will aid you (with your established power) in making heavy contact, but maintaining separation and allow you to watch the play commit, shed the block and make the play.

  5. you use "small circles". its a martial arts technique that i use a lot. when your about to take a hit or something like that, you bend your knees like a squat, and connect with your shoulders. then right when you connect twist the other way. they'll get knocked down and you'll have your whole area covered. works on offense and defense.

  6. i always felt weighing your self down will hurt your joints in the long run, so i would invest in a parichute to tie to you and run with, im sure your school has some you can use, and work with some of the DB and RB and do some of the drills they do to improve quickness, you will gain your teamates respect and get better at the same time also i noticed i got alot better at  football and quickness by playing alot of basketball so get on the court if you dont allready,

ur talkin about college ball and this dude up there is talkin about when he was 8......lol...and getttin low, im pretty sure you know about gettin low if you make it past middle school football
