  1. Caring is the best way to help, congratulations!!

Read as much as you can about how to help the environment; things such as greenlightmag.com and motherearthnews.com and seventhgeneration.com and google things like composting, alternative energy, recycling.

The more you know, and the more you tell others, the more you get others to start thinking about it.

    Kudos for wanting to help.

  2. take your own canvas shoping bags to the grocery stores, don't accept bags from the stores if you do not really need it. You can also try to catch a ride to and from places if your all heading to the same place its the little things that matter. Always donate your stuff instead of throwing it away, and try to by products packaged in recycled material

  3. -turn off computers, tvs, lights etc. when not in use

-pack a litterless lunch to school

    -use www.blackle.com instead of www.google.com

-try to eat less meat, and eat more locally grown food

-instead of using the car, try to walk, bike, take public transit and etc. more

    -reduce, reuse and recycle

-buy organic food and clothes (yes I said clothes!!!)

-take 5-minute showers (well try to, let yourself have a 10-minute shower once a week)

-when shopping, use a reusable bag (canvas bag)

The BEST thing you can do is educate others about helping the environment. You're spreading the word about green living, which is the BEST thing you can do.

Glad to see there are other environmentally savvy teens out there besides me :) (My friends and family say I care TOO much about the environment, but nothing is ever too much.)

  4. not to smoke..pick up trash and separate.

  5. And after you do all the suggestions your parents will see how passionate you are - then you can start asking them to buy or not to buy certain foods. Ask them to switch to green power (if u have that there- it helps wind farms)

You can talk to them about saving a bit of money and turning down the heat a few degrees.

Give a talk at your school to you class about all the things you learnt... possibly if you write to a lighting company and tell them you will do this they  might even give  you free energy effecient light bulb samples to give to your class ( sound cute)...

Ask for a bike for christmas ( or a heavy duty lock for it)- insist on using it everywhere!

    good luck..

  6. Spend a single hour each week picking up trash alongside a roadway & transporting it to a proper waste disposal facility.  Good for your health, good for your community and good for the earth. Enjoy.

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000. -- Lowell Ponte "The Cooling", 1976

If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000...This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age. -- Kenneth E.F. Watt on air pollution and global cooling, Earth Day (1970)

What we've got to do in energy conservation is try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, to have approached global warming as if it is real means energy conservation, so we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy. -- Timothy Wirth, former U.S. Senator (D-Colorado)

    Henry Louis Mencken (1880- 1956 )

  9. One thing that most teens do is use AIM. I know that most teens will put an away message up and simply walk away from their computers for hours at a time. A very simple way to save tons of energy would be to turn off the computer instead of putting an away message up or put the computer into 'sleep' mode.

  10. try to recycle all those cans of soda you drinking....

  11. Suzy Q has quite a number of good suggestions; here's a few more...

    - keep frozen water bottles in the freezer to take up empty space.   Periodically move some of the ice bottles to the fridge...

your fridge & freezer will use alot less energy when extra space is filled with ice instead of air that escapes everytime you open the fridge...

if the power ever goes out, you'll have a ready-made ice box !

    & less food will spoil.

    - 4 watt night lights will keep you from having to turn on the overhead lights when you go into a room

    - try to avoid using plastics & synthetics & when you do, recycle them...

    - eating fruit instead of candy is better for the body & also the earth...sugarcane farming is destructive to natural eco-systems.

    - check out the health food stores; lots of good ideas there.
