  1. talk to a bush

  2. There are LOTS of things you can do, but here are some pretty easy basic tips.

Turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth. Take showers instead of baths, and keep your shower short.

Use a dishwasher. It uses less water then hand washing. Only run full loads, but make sure there is enough space between dishes and silverware to allow for adequate water flow.

Run your washing machine with cold water, most loads (except ones with greasy stains) don't need hot water. Again, only run full loads (but not overly full). If you have a clothes line, use that instead of the dryer, when you can.

Turn off lights when you leave the room, even if it is only for a few minutes.

Unplug anything not in use. Anything that is plugged in is still sucking electricity, even if it's not turned on (even cell phone chargers, TVs, toasters, blenders, lamps, etc.).

Turn your AC up a few degrees in the summer and supplement with a fan, or turn it off completely and use just a fan. Turn your heat down a few degrees in the winter and wrap up in a blanket.

Recycle. You would be surprised how much that we throw away can actually be recycled. Go here: http://earth911.org/recycling/ to search your area and find places that you can recycle certain things.

Get reusable shopping bags. A lot of places now carry them for about $1 USD a piece. Bring them with you everywhere you might buy something.

Use your printer as little as possible, and set it to double sided printing when you are using it. Instead of printing out directions to places, write them on a scrap paper, or text them to your cell phone and you won't need paper at all. Use scrap paper such as used envelopes to write your shopping lists on. Recycle paper when you are done with it.

Read the newspaper online instead of in print.

Drive your car less. Walk, bike, or take public transportation when you can. It's more eco-friendly and it will save you money on gas and wear-and-tear on your car.

Use professional car washes. Compared to 150 gallons for at home washing, professional washes average about 20 gallons of water use per car, while drive-through washes average about 80 gallons. If you must wash at home, use a bucket or turn the hose off between rinses.

Use soy candles instead of paraffin candles. Paraffin candles are made from petroleum, which, as you know, is a limited resource and is becoming very expensive. They also pollute your air with carcinogens and petro-chemicals.

Clean with non-toxic products like baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and club soda. This will help keep chemicals out of the environment and out of your home.

If you paint in your home, use low or no VOC paints. They contain less chemicals, are better for indoor air quality, and don't smell as bad.

Don't throw away used clothing, furniture, toys, etc. Give them to charity, or list them on sites such as http://www.craigslist.org or http://www.freecycle.org

Bring your own mug when you get coffee or tea.

  3. Walk more.  If you have an errand to run close by, save some gas and get some exercise to boot.

    Recycle

Turn off unneeded lights and appliance when not in the room.

Buy products with as much post-consumer waste percentage packaging as possible.

Bring your own bags to the grocery store.

    Plant a tree.

Try to buy as much locally produced foods as possible,  less transportation = less pollutants in the atmosphere

Trade in that gas guzzler for the most fuel efficient car you can afford.
