  1. practice practice practice

just got to keep on working at it

work on quick starts and stops back and forth when you get the chance

  2. Call Up Sergei Fedorov

One of the Fastest Skaters in the NHL

    See What He Says

  3. keep practice!

  4. work on your edges, stops/starts at public sessions, you can't always rely on your game and practise time to work on your skating, where it should come automatically

get a good pair of rollerblades, even though the edges are a tad different any time spent on skates will help

  5. Off ice conditioning. Plyometrics help build explosion and quickness on the ice. You can find a ton of plyometric drills on the internet, they benefit almost all athletes. Things like high jumps, long jumps, and side to side jumps for explosion and if you find a ledge or curb that you can hop up and down from as fast as you can it will improve your foot speed. These drills build up your fast twitch muscle fibers.

Of course nothing is more important than having good skating technique however, and you need to push yourself on and off the ice or nothing is going to help.

  6. theres a couple things you could do, you can change the profile on your skates, some people say that your skates can be rockered, its the same thing, but it changes how much of your blade is touching the ice, if you go into a pro shop they should know what your talking about, aslo if you change the hollow of the skate. a lot of proshops have a standard hollow of 7/16, if you try a 1/2 inch or shallower, it can help you go faster because there is less friction, so if you think that a higher hollow will make you faster it wont.

  7. well if you can't get on the ice much do alot of running. kinda the same idea as skating on ice. run long distance at a steady pace to build stamina. You'll be faster at the end of the game than the other guys. And suicides and sprints will help for when you need the quick bursts of speed. Not the same as skating but it will help alot. Most kids at my high school do lacrosse for these reasons. Plus its the same action as hockey

  8. Roller blades were invented here in Minnesota so hockey players could keep up on the practice in the off season  (yes we do have a couple days of summer).

So if you don't have a pair now, that is what you should be practicing with.

Good luck and have fun.  Hockey is a great sport.
