What are some ways of getting upgraded to First class section for your flight?Any tips or suggestions..that would be worth a try and wont get you into trouble..thanks!

Although the previous two answers may sound a little sarcastic, they are correct.  Upgrades are valuable and highly sought after. Airlines keep them for their best and most profitable customers - high mileage frequent fliers, VIPs from major corporate accounts, and travelers who pay full fare for their tickets.  There are usually no seats left over after taking care of those groups.

Airlines don't just upgrade people who fly once every year or so and buy deeply discounted tickets. They're not going to stick a frequent flier in the back and upgrade an occasional customer whose ticket they are losing money on.

You can try dressing up nicely and asking politely. However, don't be disappointed or hurt if you're turned down, or worse, the agent laughs at you.  Sorry, but that's how it works!

Pay FULL FARE for your airline ticket, have a shiny (elite) frequent fleir card.

Whatever you do - don't whine about sitting in coach.  There are other people that travel ALOT that deserve those first class seats more than the once a year traveler.

Or - be a military member.  Sometimes I will give up my 1st class seat for them.
