  1. SMILE. Its the first thing people notice about you. If you are friendly and cheery, they'll love you.

Listen to your customers. Make sure you understand their order. If you don't, ask. It's better than them getting something that they didn't want.

Check on them from time to time. Make sure their drinks are full, and if they need anything extra. A lot of times when I deliver the food I'll say "Can I get you anything else for right now?" and sometimes they do need extra napkins or a condiment that is not on the table.

Always ask if they want dessert or anything else. Sometimes people will have breakfast, and then want dessert! And make sure the check is properly done. Always check your prices, and add it correctly. Sometimes I mess up the adding, and I feel like a total idiot!!

Even after you give them the check, see if they want more coffee or drinks. It shows that even though you don't have to, you are still interested in them.

Waitressing is really a fun job. You get to meet many different types of people. There are some sour ones out there, but don't take it personally. You can't please all of the people all of the time. And if you need help, ASK another waitress to help you. I'm sure they will. I would rather have a new girl ask for help, then having to clean up her mistakes or whatever. And all I can say is GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

  2. ring in the order as soon as you take it from the table, that way it doesnt take hours to get to the table. if you cant run the food, someone else that works there will for you. just ALWAYS be in the habit of keying in the order as soon as you take it.

refill drinks without being asked, clear ALL empty/dirty dsihes from the table. Make it a habit to not go back to the kitchen without something in your hands. always use talky language like "it was my pleasure" .

If you are waiting tables at a restaurant that includes the service charge, upsale menu items like you cant stop. the higher their check the higher their service charge is going to be. if you work at a restaurant which does not include the tip on the bill, try to underpromise but overdeliver to your guests. if they are seniors and your establishment gives senior discounts GIVE IT TO THEM.DONT give away free food cuz you think your table will tip larger. it looks unprofessional. Try to build yourself some regulars. they will come in and tip the same thing everytime. they are a fer shure tip. ALWAYS write the orders down. you will have complainers who when they ask to speak to a manger to complain to try and get their meal discounted or comped, they will tell the manager if you didnt write the order down. well keep it for proof, and to avoid small mistakes with the orders. treat your section as one large group instead of individual tables. in other words, if you have 3 tables in your section and all of them are sat, bring all of the tables refills instead of making multiple trips for one table at a time. if a couple comes in to sit down, since women have a tendency to be jealous in nature, always compliment the woman to make her feel comfortable. you can notice her earrings or her hair or something to make her feel less insecure. DO NOT carry or hover your trays over highchairs or small children. it make the parents nervous you will drop something. In silver service you serve food from the left and prebus the empty plates from the right of the guest. knives, cup handles are in one o clock position, and if the plates have a company logo serve the logo at 12oclock postion. take orders from the hosts left in a clockwise postion. uae the correct garnishments. suggest dessert. if a table wont leave and they have paid, go clear off everything remaining on the tabgle to see if they get the hint.

the more tables you take on the more money that is for you. so dont get lazy and ask to get cut early or ask to be taken off the floor. since most people dont want to work, build yourself a reputation of taking shifts for someone who doesnt want to work their shift. thats more hours for you. if the guests see you exhibiting team work, they will be impressed. if you get in the habit of helping others, others will catch on and help you as well. if you are friendly and help out the cooks and run the food that is taking up too much room in their food window, run it out. you get on the cook's/kitchen's good side and help them, and they will pay more attention to get you food right instead of forgetting something. the guests will usually take things like this out on you. they dont care if you didnt prepare it. they think you should've caught the issue before running it out to them.

never tell the other servers how much you make. that is a foolish thing to do. practice good hygiene!! always wash your hands. you are working in the open public and this is how people spread germs.

when you start your shift, come in and make sure everything is stocked in the server area, so that during the rush or hit you wont have to run around looking for supplys. you will already have it stocked. and this saves you time. oh yeah, use your manners duh. here is a system of steps to remember. (no matter where you wait tables this system is a step process that will help you to deliver the best table service. you can elaborate on the steps if you wish, just dont change the order of or the steps themselves. it goes like this:

    1. GREET THE TABLE: Hello my name is .....im going to be your server tonite/today, take the drink order/and appetizer order if they have one. Key these things in immediatly.

    2. serve drinks and take the order. serve the appetizer if it is up yet, if not take the order and serve drinks. take the order and key it in.

    3. serve soups/salads/ any sides (only after the appetizer, not before unless requested.)

    4. serve the entree.

5.1st callback: "how is your steak? how is our meal?" (look for any empty glasses to fill) prebus if you can.

    6. clear the table of all plates and dessert call back. "did we save room for dessert?" (it looks more professional if u can name some items for example " Did we save room for a better together brownie tonight/today or creme brulee?"

    7. deliver the check in a check presenter take the payment, pay them out, and tell them it was a pleasure to serve them blah blah blah . be sure and thank them.

p.s. if there is a state law in your stae to have a alcohol permit to serve liquer, always id the guests. if something we to go wrong with them drinking you can be held responsible and you wont be able to serve ever again inyour state.

sometimes it is necessary to create a mistake (one that you kow you can correct for them) and correct it, and the guest/s will think you saved the day.

  3. be really friendly and be concerned about the costumer and maybe show a little skin, that never hurts.

  4. be open and friendly

  5. I always tip bigger when someone is really on the ball.  Friendly, drinks always full and knowledgeable of the menu.  Go out of your way to make the customer feel welcome and appreciated. Good Luck with the new job!

  6. Smiles, Cleavage & Attentive Service!

  7. I can tell you from experience, it is the women who leave the biggest tips...NOT the men like most people think. I always did really well by being nice and friendly to the woman. Try to be helpful.

  8. There have been studies on this, and some was in a recent Maclean's magazine. Apparently crouching down by the table to take the order, putting your name and a smiley face or something on the bill, and giving candies or mints with the bill will all increase the amount of tips you get.

  9. Always keep drinks full. I like to ask for a drink once, when I order it. If I have to flag down my server for more coffee, the tip goes down. If there are more than 2 cig butts in the ashtray, goes down again. Empty plates on the table, another minus.  Just focus on the things YOU like in a server and try to emulate them. And noone wants to hear about your bad day. Nor do they want to wonder if you forgot your deodorant as you lean over the table, so hygeine, no hand or arm jewelry.

  10. Flirt flirt flirt flirt!!!!!

  11. Yes, open and friendly - and no matter what, don't lose your smile - even if your station is piling up! Customers notice attitude and tip for good ones.

  12. Be nice and courteous.  Make good wine suggestions, bring samples!  Know the menu, people will ask you  how things taste.

Always bring extra napkins to people w/ kids.  Keep their drinks full.

PRIORITZE!  It is so easy to get in the weeds if you are a scatter brain, make sure you create an order for you to do things.

Pace the meal, I can't stand it when I get my appetizers either at the same time or right before my meal.  Make sure you pace their meal so that they have time between each course.

  13. 1. dont be to pushy dont  keep the customers waiting for ages

    2. Bring food out quickly

    3. if there is a problem in the kitchen, tell the customers that there food might take a little longer than thought, they are more likely to sit and wait if they know what is going on

    4. if the customers talk to you, talk back, dont just use 1 word answers, but dont stand around and talk for ages!

    5. be generally nice

  14. I've never waitressed, but as a customer, my food can take four hours to get to me, as long as you stop by and say "you're food will be here soon" or "sorry the kitchen's backed up, it'll be here soon".  Something that I know you didn't forget about me.  I know you can't control how quickly the food gets here, but you can control whether or not you acknowledge me in the meantime.  If you don't remind me that you know I still exist, your tip will drop dramatically.
