  1. Everything that can't be made into steaks and roasts, can be trimmed off and made into hamburger or sausage.  The hamburger or sausage will be very dry because of a lack of fat.  The hamburger is wonderful for meat sauces such as spaghetti sauce but if you want to make hamburgers from it, you will have to mix in some beef to make it stick together to form a pattie.  If you make sausage, you will need to mix in about 25% pork.  Otherwise it will be too dry.  I like to make smoked sausage from much of my trimmings.  I mix 75% venison with 25% pork butt.  This gives a nice juicy sausage without it being too greasy or too dry.

The ribs have very little meat on them and many people throw them away.  I will save them and cook them over the camp fire.  They make a wondeful fireside snack.  I just sprinkle them with seasoned salt, wrap them in foil and put them on the coals to cook.  When they are almost done, I remove them from the foil and put them on a grill over the fire to finish them off.  Then I just gnaw the meat off the bones.  Like I say, they won't make a meal but they are a great fireside snack.

Okay, all you should have left at this point are the bones.  If you want, you can season the bones and put them in the oven and roast them.  Remove them from the oven and put them in a pot with some carrots, onions, celery and seasonings.  Simmer them very slowly all day long and you will end up with a tasty broth that you can use to make soups, gravies, etc..

The hide can be tanned  to make a very nice leather, the antlers can be either mounted on the wall or used to make knife handles.  The hooves can be boiled until the hoof comes loose from the bone and the empty hoof can be used for various decorations, powder measures, etc.  Anything else that you have left can be tossed into the garbage unjless you have a use for the bones as knife handles, tool handles, etc.

By this point, you should have used up everything and nothing has gone to waste.

  2. These guys have covered most everything, except the sinew. Save it!  Let it dry out and then give it or sell it to the guys who make their own arrows and bows in the traditional manner.  I've heard the hooves can be ground or chopped up and boiled until they turn to glue which is something else traditional bowmakers can use.  The bones can be used to make arrow points and nocks, bone awls and even bone knife blades.  Whatever organs are left over are really not wasted.  They are eaten by other animals, insects and micro-organisms.

  3. as far as meat, you can use most of it either steaks, roasts, and grind the rest.  Always can use antlers to display or make lamps, coat racks, or other ornaments from.

Another great move with a buck is to get the tarsal glands located on the rear legs.  Put in a plastic bag and seal for another hunt.  Best scent, since its the real thing.

Check out the this link for location.....you'll know when you find it, smells pretty ripe, since the deer has been urinating on itself. But hey, no different then buying it in the bottle at a store.

Also some people eat deer heart, brains, liver, tongue, and other organs. I don't myself, but you may find someone you want to so as not to waste the whole thing.

Myself, i use any deer remains as coyote bait.

  4. I give the bones to my dogs after I boil them

I tan the hides and make tack out of it

Paint dots on the teeth and play a game of deer craps

Use the innards for coyote bait

  5. Tan the hide, you can use the brains to do this.

If you have a way to grind bones up they can be fertiliser.  The indians didn't even use all the bones, and they used a lot of bone tools.  There is a very thick layer at the bottom of Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump that was just sitting there until some company decided to dig it up for fertiliser.

  6. Use the brains for tanning the skin it is suppose to keep the hair from falling off and keep it soft, Soak the liver in milk over night and cook the next day and eat it, use the urine to attract bucks, Horns you can make hundreds of things like cabinet handles or knife handles or sling shot handle etc....!*

  7. you can use the bones for knife's/handles and the fur to keep you warm. you can eat the heart liver ect. mount the feet for a gun rack teeth for a necklace. i know it sounds funny but if you pour a little bit of deer blood in your plants the deer stay away from them.
