  1. They have casado and gallo pinto. I don´t know if it´s weird for you but that is the traditional cuisine of Costa Rica. Here is a link

  2. How can someone say a casado or gallo pinto is weird food. They obviously have never tasted it. They are just special names for what some people happen to eat on a regular basis.

"Weird food" I have tried when I visit family there is mondongo and cow tongue, which I thought were delicious...lol. But thats just me cause I am of costa rican dissent.

And for the record...I love the tacos from CR. Everything there is pretty much amazing. The only things I think taste weird are the processed meats like bologna and hot dogs.

  3. i dont know about weird foods, everybody eats gross stuff but there isnt much traditional nasty foods. but the food is mostly bland and its rice and beans with lots of fruit. little to no spices.

  4. haha, it's interesting to hear what people have to say, though "Daniel E" didn't go to the right place for food in Costa Rica.

The tamales r a very traditional food here, and i didn't like them when i first had a bite when i was a little girl, but then i decided to try it again  and it tasted really good!!. I havn't ried the "mondongo", but personally i think the name makes it sound desgcusting though i sholdn't juged it until i taste it, well anyway i think mos of the tipical food here is pretty good. Though i can't b-lieve i'm a tica and havn't tasted so many things. OUGH!!!!............., I WANT TO EAT TIPICAL FOOD!!!..............i'm hungry.

  5. In addition to what other people have said, I would add that a 'taco' here is nothing like a Mexican taco, unless you go to Taco Bell, and then it's STILL not much like a Mexican Taco. I went to a place that advertised itself as a Mexican style Taqueria, and ordered a taco. I got a cold tortilla wrapped around a little bit of chicken, lots of cabbage, and topped with thousand island dressing. YUCK! And if you get a tamale, it will be bland, wrapped in banana leaves and probably contain green peas. Spicy food is almost unheard of.

Also, the locals love cilantro and put it in everything, even spaghetti. I hate the stuff, personally. The best thing here is the Pollo a la lena, which is roasted chicken over a coffee wood fire. Delicious. But the salad you get (if you get a combination) will be cabbage. There is a reason there aren't any Costa Rican restaurants outside Costa Rica.

  6. In my opnion the weirdest thing that people eat here is "mondongo"which is tripe. There are some very different fruits here unline anything anywhere else, some are sticky cottony like seed that you suck the cotton stuff off the seed.

Lichees, which here are called "mamones chino"are one of the weirdest looking but most delicious fruits on the planet.

The other truly weird thing that Ticos eat at Christmas time is called "frito"and is basically some type of fried brain thing.

I could never get it near my mouth!

  7. Some of their "sausages" are weird looking and taste very different than anything in the U.S.  (For one thing, they look uncooked.)
