  1. Have you looked up the definition of vernacular? It means using plain, everyday, ordinary language, and it can include slang and idiomatic expressions.

    I don't have the book in front of me, but most of the farmhands' dialogue includes words in the vernacular. Don't they refer to "flop" as a word for sleep? That's one example.
