There's going to be an Australian exchange program at my school next week, and I've been chosen as a host for one of the students.. Could you fill me in on typical Aussie backgrounds, like what they like or don't like?? The Aussie slang?? I'm going to be hosting a 15 year old boy, so what do the teens in Perth like? Any football info or such??

Gosh, i think i'm getting over excited about all of this!!! And thanks for your help!!

  1. hello,

do you know which school the exchange program is with?

I'm also from Perth. chances are loves his footy - don't get it wrong -(its Australian football league) not soccer! would love the beach and is use to hot weather. would surly know the name Ben Cousins (Perths David beckham) ask him!! generally all round nice and friendly. he probably wont speak any of the slang associated with Australia, just normal English. good luck to both of you. love to hear how it goes :)

  2. G'day mate how ya goin.

Bugger is not a dirty word.

    f***y means something offencive.

    Everybody is a mate.

Vegimite on toast for Breakfast but let him put it on .Americans have no idea how to use it. I'm sure he will bring his own. Aussie rules football is the only code. We have  no racist thoughts.

Have a ball show him the sights I bet he will love it

  3. OY BeeKat! I say G'day mate!!! I also call women "chicks" and guys "dudes", "bloke", or "mate"...

However, I must also admit here that I am greek-australian, so this may also play a part in my "fully sick mate" language lolololol

Overall, I dont think it's so much the slang that sets us apart fro everyone else...it's more the accent...it can range from not particularly strong to almost indistinguishable (what's with QLD'ers??? hehe)...and I think the aussie accent may be based on getting all the words you wanna say out as quick as possible, using as few syllables as possible lololol But like that other dude said, I think we're just a very laid-back nation

You'll have fun with your aussies...we're the best!

  4. G'dai mic ! ( Good day mate )

  5. i live in Perth i was a courier for 8 and a half years and even though im a female it was always  how ya going mate from the guys i worked with, or g,day mate  you cant change that, bonza means good, most guys like footy in Perth not soccer, main teams are the( Dockers)  thats Fremantle team or( The Eagles) are the main Perth team, boys will like football, skate boarding or surfing,

  6. Your 15 year old charge will have a ball Perth has the best beaches and surfing ever all year round

Football isn't football as you know it a  joke for it is aerial ping pong hahaha still worth a look.

Wonderful meat pies to be had as for the slang you will pick that up rather fast its the accent that's the hardest plenty Of other things to do and find as well

    Have a ball!!!!!

  7. hey there,

Where are you at? Exchanges are fun. i live in Brisbane (other side of Aus) but same idea. Worst thing you could do is say "G'day mate" like, no one says that here. You'd be best to find out his likes/dislikes then find out more, he could be a surfer or a gamer or both. I don't think I am making much sense..... But to answer your question:

We have chips, not fries. A thong is a shoe, not a piece of under wear. We put tomato sauce on our chips, not kechup. There are three types of football in Australia: NRL, AFL and Union. We don't call soccer football, we call it soccer. We call mobile phones, mobile phones, not cell phone. we don't call your bottom "butt" we call it "bum".

Either I've helped a bit or made a complete idiot of myself. Have fun with your exchange student : D

  8. Perths favourite footy team are the Fremantle Dockers

Mate, Bloke, Wanker are used alot

Western Force are perths rugby team

    Aussies like easy-going, fun people

We dont like it much when people stress to much

Hope i helped and good luck with your Aussie mate!

  9. "Yeah nah" - I understand, and I agree
