    Supplements probably won't get you pumped. The only thing that will get you pumped is getting pumped.



    Creatine may be of some help, but please don't expect too much of it.

    Creatine has been shown to have some effect in short-duration, intense effort such as sprinting or 'burst' weightlifting--heavy weights, one time, for example, but it will not increase your ability by very much.

    If you need endurance, however, for say running a few miles, creatine does no good.

    Other than creatine, the only 'supplement' that has been shown to be of any effect is caffeine. Runner's World magazine (I'm a subscriber) a few years ago reported that runners increase their ability by about 15% when they have caffeine before their workout. It seems to help me by about that much in my runs in the morning. But other than that, supplements are the wrong place to look for motivation and ability.

    You see, double-blind studies (studies where neither the participant nor the person administering the supplement or the placebo--a lookalike substance that has no effect, used for comparison in the study--know which is being given to what person) show that supplements have no effect unless the person is deficient in that substance.

    You probably are not deficient in anything, not even creatine (which you make in your own body, in your liver), but creatine is one of the very few substances that you can take and will have some positive effect. Not much, though.

    What will is exercise. It's funny stuff, exercise. It is hard to do and it makes us tired at first, but in the long run it makes us more energized, more capable. We not only can do more, we want to do more.

    So, really, if you want to be pumped then exercise, work out.
